Reports: Ravens Re-Sign Cornerback Derek Cox

Posted Sep 2, 2014

The Ravens released cornerback Derek Cox on Saturday, and he reportedly drew interest elsewhere.

The Ravens have re-signed cornerback Derek Cox, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Cox was released by the Ravens on Saturday as part of the final cutdown, but the roster usually goes through some changes before the first regular-season game.

The Sun is reporting that an AFC South team had hoped to sign Cox after he was released.

Baltimore reportedly agreed to another one-year, $730,000 contract that counts $570,000 against the NFL salary cap per the veteran minimum.

The Ravens have not confirmed the signing, and there are no reports on who the team would cut to make room for Cox on the 53-man roster. Baltimore was thin at cornerback after keeping just four on their active 53-man roster: Jimmy Smith, Lardarius Webb, Asa Jackson and Chykie Brown.

Cox played well in the Ravens’ preseason finale in New Orleans, notching three tackles and one pass deflection in limited work. Cox was cut last week by the Minnesota Vikings, and the Ravens scooped him up.

He signed a big four-year, $20 million deal last offseason with San Diego, showing the Chargers felt he was a long-term building block. But he struggled as a slot cornerback, and had 38 tackles and one interception in 2013. He lost his starting spot down the stretch and was cut in March.

Cox previously played well in Jacksonville as an outside cornerback. He was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2010, and had a career-high 60 tackles with four interceptions in 2012.

A former third-round pick out of William & Mary, Cox intercepted former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in his first NFL game in 2009.
