Rolando McClain Releases Statement

Posted May 16, 2013

The inside linebacker leaves the door open to coming back to the Ravens.

Rolando McClain’s decision to retire from the NFL at just 23 years old caught the NFL by surprise yesterday.

On Thursday, the inside linebacker’s agent released a statement to media explaining the move.

"Clearly, my decision to retire has raised some questions," McClain said in the statement. "Quite simply, I love football, but I have decided at this time it is in my best interest to focus on getting my personal life together. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the future holds for me, including football. This was entirely my decision and the Ravens have been very supportive during this process. I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave me and wish them the best of luck in the future. God willing, maybe I'll play for them one day."

McClain, the former No. 8 overall pick, informed General Manager Ozzie Newsome of his decision just one month after signing with the Ravens. He was arrested in his hometown of Decatur, Ala., 10 days after signing with Baltimore. The incident was his third arrest in the last 16 months.

In his three-year NFL career, McClain has 274 tackles (195 solo), 6.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and 23 passes defensed in 41 career games with Oakland.
