Rookie Receiver Aaron Mellette Moved To Injured Reserve

The rookie receiver's season comes to an end because of a knee injury.


Aaron Mellette’s season has come to an end.

The rookie receiver out of Elon was placed on injured reserve (IR) Wednesday because of a knee injury. Mellette, a seventh-round pick, made the roster after a strong performance throughout the preseason.

In a corresponding roster move, the Ravens signed former Chiefs running back Shaun Draughn.

Moving Mellette to injured reserve leaves the Ravens with just four healthy wide receivers: Torrey Smith, Brandon Stokley, Marlon Brown and Tandon Doss. Jacoby Jones (knee) and Deonte Thompson (foot) are both currently sidelined, but Thompson told reporters Wednesday that he hopes to be back “real soon.”

Mellette was a scratch in the Ravens’ season opener last week, and Head Coach John Harbaugh indicated earlier this week that the Ravens might look for him to take on a larger role.

“He’s playing well,” Harbaugh said Monday. “There’s nothing that he’s doing that wouldn’t make him a possibility to be active. We only had four receivers up [after Jones was hurt].”

Now Mellette’s season is over before taking a regular- season snap.

He caught nine passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason. He will now spend the rest of the year on IR and look to make an impact when he returns in 2014.
