Terrell Suggs, Steve Smith Sr., Breshad Perriman, Elvis Dumervil Still Expected To Be Ready Week 1

Posted Aug 9, 2016

Head Coach John Harbaugh said Suggs is the closest to returning to practice, but Harbaugh is the one holding him back. There hasn’t been a decision made on how much they’ll play in the preseason.

Ravens training camp is nearly two weeks old and the four big names on the physically unable to perform list have still not taken the field.

The goal is still in sight for linebackers Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil and wide receivers Steve Smith Sr. and Breshad Perriman. Head Coach John Harbaugh said all four players are still expected to be ready for the regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 11.

He’s just not sure yet how much they’ll play in the preseason.

“We do expect them all to play in the opener,” Harbaugh said. “As far as the preseason, I think it goes back to ‘we’ll see.’ They all want to play, I know that. They’re all working really hard to play in the preseason.”

The Ravens would ideally like to get their veterans some action before the regular season starts. Of the four players, it seems Suggs would have the greatest chance. Harbaugh said Suggs is the closest to a return considering his Achilles injury happened in Week 1 of last year.

“He’s already on me about practicing, I’m holding him back right now,” Harbaugh said of Suggs. “He’ll be out there soon practicing. How much we play him remains to be seen.”

Harbaugh wants to get the team’s young players a lot of action and he generally doesn’t play his veterans a ton in the preseason. So Smith Sr. and Dumervil likely wouldn’t see a lot of action even if they weren’t coming off injuries.

Perriman, on the other hand, needs the reps after missing all of last year. His injury, however, was the latest to happen as he hurt his knee during Organized Team Activities.

“The other guys, they’re probably a little longer than [Suggs] is with him being ready,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll just see where we go.”
