The Caw: Matt Birk Disputes Harbaugh Family Motto

Posted Jan 27, 2013

Matt Birk says John Harbaugh didn’t originate, ‘Where else would you rather be?’

John Harbaugh says it at the first day of minicamp. He says it during the dog days of training camp. He says it as the Ravens prepare for the Super Bowl.

“Where else would you rather be?”

It’s a phrase he learned from his father, Jack, and was common saying around the Harbaugh household.

But hold up a second. That ain’t no Harbaugh family phrase.

“I was informed by Matt Birk today that it was not an original Harbaugh statement, which I thought it was,” Harbaugh said with a laugh Saturday.

“I was taking full credit for it, but he informed me that [former Bills head coach] Marv Levy said that originally. Thank you, Marv. It’s a great point.”

Actually, Levy wrote a book entitled “Where Else Would You Rather Be?” So it seems he’s got that phrase on lockdown.

“I’m an NFL Films junkie,” Birk told me afterwards. “At first, I was surprised that Harbs hadn’t heard about it. He was convinced that he had made it up. I didn’t want him cited for plagiarism or anything; I wanted to keep him out of jail.”
