The Caw: Torrey Smith Takes #IceBucketChallenge

Posted Aug 9, 2014

Wide receiver Torrey Smith joined the social media charge to raise awareness for ALS.

The #IceBucketChallenge has spread to Ravens training camp, and wide receiver Torrey Smith was man enough to accept.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a movement to raise awareness to fight against ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice.

According to the ALS Association’s national president, Barbara Newhouse, the movement has raised $168,000 online.

The Ravens have a close connection with ALS considering Senior Advisor to Player Development O.J. Brigance has valiantly battled the disease for seven years and counting.

Smith was challenged by Orioles pitcher Bud Norris on Facebook Friday morning. Smith learned of the challenge Saturday after practice and immediately agreed to accept.

Smith recruited military members from Ft. Meade to pour the ice cold water on him. Smith passed on the challenge to wide receiver Jacoby Jones, kicker Justin Tucker and Orioles outfielder and friend Adam Jones.

Here's Tucker responding to Smith and challenging Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, the Harbaugh brothers and Jack Harbaugh.

And here's Head Coach John Harbaugh, General Manager Ozzie Newsome, Senior Vice President of Football Administration Pat Moriarty and more current and former Ravens employees accepting the challenge from New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan.
