The Caw: Torrey Smith Touched By Award Nomination

Posted Jan 9, 2013

Wide receiver Torrey Smith said ‘it’s crazy’ to know that his performance meant so much.

In what has been an emotionally heavy year in Baltimore, does this take the cake?

On Sept. 23, Torrey Smith played against the New England Patriots less than 24 hours after his brother Tevin’s death in a motorcycle accident.

Head Coach John Harbaugh gave Smith permission to miss the game, but the wide receiver returned to Baltimore to notch six catches for 127 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-30 comeback win. It was really a magical moment that left Smith (and surely more people) in tears.

Well now the Sunday Night Football performance has made Smith a candidate for the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Year.

The nomination clearly touched Smith, who tweeted this Wednesday afternoon:

“It’s crazy to know that playing in our game after my brother’s death meant so much to so many different people. I played because it was best for my family and I didn’t want to let my team down. My performance is now nominated for GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Year. In reality it wasn’t about me at all. It is all about my team, family, fans and Tevin. They were the reason I was able to be successful. Because of this nomination my brother’s name will go on.”

Here’s Smiths’ competition. This should be a slam dunk for Smith, but make sure you vote:

  • Saints quarterback Drew Brees breaking Johnny Unitas’ record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass
  • Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning coming back from a 24-point halftime deficit against San Diego. It was the largest deficit a Manning-led team had faced in a victory
  • New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz’s 77-yard touchdown against the Redskins with one minute, 13 seconds remaining
  • Washington quarterback Kick Cousins replacing Robert Griffin III and leading a comeback win against Baltimore (guessing you won’t be voting for this one)
