Torrey Smith Would Like To Add Chain Moving Receiver

Posted Feb 25, 2014

The fourth-year receiver also weighed in on new Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak.

The Ravens are set on adding another wide receiver to the roster.

General Manager Ozzie Newsome said he knows the type of receiver he wants, and he’s confident that he’ll be on the roster for training camp.

Top target Torrey Smith is excited about the idea of adding another pass catcher to the mix, and identified a “move-the-chains guy” as the type of receiver the Ravens are missing.

“That’s probably someone that we need on a consistent basis,” Smith said during a community event Thursday at Dickey Hill Elementary and Middle School. “Another weapon like that is just another person that Joe [Flacco] can rely on.”

A new receiver could come from the draft or free agency, as Newsome said the Ravens will look at “every avenue” to bring in new talent this offseason. The Ravens have also done their diligence in scouting a talented draft class of receivers, reportedly meeting with several of this year’s top targets at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“The more, the merrier,” Smith said. “The more help you can have, no matter what position it is, that’s only going to make us stronger as a unit. Whoever we bring in, whether it’s a free agent or a rookie, we’ll welcome him with open arms.”

The Ravens have some uncertainty with their receiving corps, as tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson, and wideout Jacoby Jones are all unrestricted free agents. The Ravens have been in talks with Pitta, but have yet to work out a long-term extension.

Regardless of what happens with the free agents, the offense is in the middle of a transition with new Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak. He joined the Ravens about a month ago, and has worked to build an offensive staff and establish a new playbook.

Smith met Kubiak the day he was hired because he was in the Under Armour Performance center for a workout.

“I walked in and it was Coach Kubiak, and I was excited just knowing what he’s done in the past, and his credibility in this league,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to learning from him.”

Smith is coming off the best individual season of his career, where he caught 65 passes for 1,128 yards and four touchdowns. The Ravens missed the playoffs for the first time during Smith’s career, and he is motivated to avoid that feeling again next season.

“It’s tough to lose anything,” Smith said. “Now I know what it’s like to be at the highs and now I know what it’s like to be at the lows. It is going to happen. I don’t want it to happen. And we were still in position to get that playoff spot, but we didn’t finish.

“We know what we need to do to take it to the next level and we know what we need to do to get back there."
