Torrey Smith's Charity Basketball Game Saturday

Posted Mar 24, 2014

The 'Battle of the Beltway' will take place at the Comcast Center Saturday at 5 p.m.

Torrey Smith’s annual charity basketball game will take place at its new home Saturday afternoon.

The “Battle of the Beltway” will be played at Maryland’s Comcast Center in College Park, and it will feature a matchup of the Ravens vs. Redskins. Smith and a number of his teammates will take on Redskins linebacker Ryan Kerrigan’s team, and proceeds from the event will benefit both of their foundations.

Smith previously held the event at his old high school in Colonial Beach, Virginia, but the game outgrew the facilities there and they had to look for a larger venue. The Comcast Center was the perfect place for the Maryland graduate.

“It’s awesome that it has grown because it obviously will be able to help both of our foundations more,” Smith said.  “The Comcast Center, the University of Maryland – that’s a special place for me. Having it at my high school was great, but it grew and being able to have it a little close to Baltimore is awesome.”

A number of current and former Ravens will participate in the game, including cornerback Lardarius Webb, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, quarterback Tyrod Taylor and wide receivers Anquan Boldin, Marlon Brown and Gerrard Sheppard

The Redskins team will feature cornerback DeAngelo Hall and quarterback Kirk Cousins, and there will also be other NFL stars like Cleveland Browns cornerback Joe Haden and wide receivers Josh Gordon and Greg Little.

“Having friends come out and support is awesome,” Smith said. “They’ll be trying to show their skills. It’s great to know that they have your back if you have a cause, and they believe in it as well.”

The Torrey Smith Foundation supports Baltimore area youth by providing education support and resources. The goal of the organization is to touch the lives of more than 35,000 children by 2016. Ryan Kerrigan’s Blitz for the Better Foundation provides support for families in the Washington area, and focuses on the seriously ill, physically challenged and those with special needs.

Tickets for the event are $20 and are on sale at TorreySmith.org. The doors open at 4 p.m., and there will be family activities like face painting, photo booths and penny wars.
