What You Missed vs. Chiefs

Posted Dec 22, 2015

Great instincts from C.J. Mosley. Breakdown of Brent Urban’s first sack. Kelechi Osemele vs. Tamba Hali.

The Ravens dropped to 4-10 on the season with the 34-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at M&T Bank Stadium.

The final result was clearly disappointing, but there were still some impressive individual performances hidden in the outcome.

Here are some plays you might have missed, and also a closer breakdown of some at the line of scrimmage. (All of these plays were viewed using NFL Game Pass, which is available for fans to purchase).

Mosley Displayed Great Instincts

Inside linebacker C.J. Mosley finished Sunday’s game with a team-high nine tackles, bringing his total to 95 on the season. Mosley hasn’t drawn anywhere near the fanfare of his rookie season, where he became the first rookie in franchise history to earn a trip to the Pro Bowl, but he showed throughout Sunday’s game why he is still one of the team’s top defenders. Mosley has great instincts to put himself around the football, particularly in the run game, and he came up with great stops on both plays below. Mosley seems to effortlessly find the soft spot in the blocking and was able to bring down the running back for a loss or a short gain.

Breakdown Of Urban’s First Sack

Defensive end Brent Urban came up with the first sack of his young career on Sunday. Urban played just 12 snaps on the day, but he made the most of his opportunity to get after quarterback Alex Smith. There wasn’t much flash with this play. It was really just Urban winning a one-on-one matchup against Chiefs left guard Zach Fulton. Urban pushed back Fulton and powered his way into the backfield to bring down the quarterback. The Ravens hope the 6-foot-7, 295-pound defender has plenty more plays like this in his future.

Osemele vs. Hali

Kelechi Osemele made his second career start at left tackle, and the audition continues to go well. Osemele didn’t give up a sack on the day, and he held his own against another talented pass rusher. Osemele faced off with five-time Pro Bowler Tamba Hali throughout the game, and Hali finished with three tackles and no sacks. In Osemele’s two starts at left tackle, he has shown the ability to bring style as a bruising run blocker out to the edge. In the first video below, Osemele absolutely clears Hali out of the play, and running back Terrance West ends up running for a 12-yard gain.

The biggest question with Osemele is how he will handle the speed rushers as a left tackle. He does a great job on the following play of preventing Hali from beating him outside, and then pouncing on him when the outside linebacker goes to the ground.
