Who's Out There 2016? Defensive Backs

Posted Mar 8, 2016

The Ravens still have their eye on the secondary, and they could add veteran help.

The Ravens kept some stability in their secondary this week by re-signing cornerback Shareece Wright, but that doesn’t mean General Manager Ozzie Newsome is done making moves.

Adding quality players in the defensive backfield is always a priority for the Ravens, and the free-agency market has some options if the Ravens choose to go that route.

Here’s an overview of what defensive backs are out there:

Top Tier

CB Janoris Jenkins, L.A. Rams
Unrestricted, 27 years old, 5-foot-10, 198 pounds
2015 stats: 64 tackles, 3 interceptions, 15 passes defensed
The former first-round pick has been a starter the last four seasons, and now he’s in line for a nice payday in free agency. Jenkins may be the best defensive back to hit the market this offseason, and he’s coming off an impressive 2015 season. Jenkins is a young player that some team will likely pay to become a foundational piece in the secondary.

S Eric Weddle, San Diego Chargers
Unrestricted, 31 years old, 5-foot-11, 200 pounds
2015 stats: 78 tackles, 0 interceptions, 0.5 sacks, 6 passes defensed
The three-time Pro Bowler is set to hit the market after his relationship with the Chargers soured last season. Weddle has spent his entire nine-year career in San Diego, but he’s headed for a change of scenery this offseason. Weddle is the kind of player the Ravens would love on the back end of their defense, but his price tag will likely put him out of reach.

CB Prince Amukamara, New York Giants
Unrestricted, 26 years old, 6-foot-0, 207 pounds
2015 stats: 63 tackles, 1 interception, 10 passes defensed
Amukamara is a former first-round pick who never really lived up to his high billing with the Giants. He has been a starter the last four seasons, but he has also dealt with injuries throughout that time. Amukamara will likely command a big contract on the market because he has a high ceiling and is entering the prime of his career, but a team like the Ravens could enter the conversation if he ends up getting passed over in the first wave of free agency.

Solid Options

CB Adam “Pacman” Jones, Cincinnati Bengals
Unrestricted, 32 years old, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds
2015 stats: 62 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 sack, 12 passes defensed
Jones is coming off a strong year with the Bengals, and he is reportedly drawing interest from multiple suitors in free agency. The 10-year veteran is a talented player who has been a solid contributor the last six years in Cincinnati, but he does have a history of off-the-field issues that could hurt his asking price on the market.

CB Leon Hall, Cincinnati Bengals
Unrestricted, 31 years old, 5-foot-11, 195 pounds
2015 stats: 44 tackles, 2 interceptions, 9 passes defensed
The Ravens know Hall well from going against him the last nine years in division matchups. Hall has been a starter for nearly his entire career, but he moved to a third cornerback role last year in Cincinnati. The veteran defender may have lost a step, but he’s still a quality player with plenty of big-game experience.

CB Antonio Cromartie, New York Jets
Unrestricted, 31 years old, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds
2015 stats: 29 tackles, 0 interceptions, 12 passes defensed
Cromartie has been a starter the last nine years in the NFL, and he’s coming off a disappointing season with the Jets. New York released him just one season into a four-year deal, and he’ll be looking to prove himself again with a new team in 2016.

Bargains

S Rahim Moore, Houston Texans
Unrestricted, 26 years old, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds
2015 stats: 16 tackles, 1 interception, 2 passes defensed
Ravens fans most remember Moore for allowing wide receiver Jacoby Jones to get past him for the Mile High Miracle en route to Super Bowl XLVII. Moore has bounced from the Broncos to the Texans since that game, and has struggled the last few years. He is still a young player with talent, and a team could get him at a bargain on a short-term contract this offseason.
