Who's Out There 2016? Pass Rushers

Posted Mar 9, 2016

The Ravens have made it clear that they need more pressure and there are options.

The Ravens have outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (Achilles) coming back next year, but there’s no doubt that they want to add more pass rush presence.

General Manager Ozzie Newsome added Elvis Dumervil via free agency before the 2013 season and has also paid for other pass rushers over the years, such as defensive end Trevor Pryce.

Will he do it again this year? Here’s who’s out there:

Top Tier

DE Robert Ayers, New York Giants
Unrestricted, 30 years old, 6-foot-3, 275 pounds
2015 stats: 41 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 4 passes defensed
Ayers had a career year last season, notching a personal-best 9.5 sacks. That was nearly double his previous career high. As he heads into his eighth season, it leaves buyers likely wondering what kind of production they’ll get from the veteran. Ayers benefitted from playing opposite Jason Pierre-Paul, as 8.5 of his sacks came after Pierre-Paul returned to the field.

Solid Options

OLB Aldon Smith, Oakland Raiders
Unrestricted, 26 years old, 6-foot-4, 265 pounds
2015 stats: 28 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 3 passes defensed
It’s hard to categorize Smith as a “solid” option considering his numerous off-field problems. Smith is still a very talented player with freakishly athletic tools. There just aren’t many people his size who move like he does, and Head Coach John Harbaugh got an up-close look while Smith and his former 49ers were in Baltimore for training camp in 2014. Still, Smith was handed a one-year suspension last November, so he wouldn’t be able to suit up immediately.

OLB Nick Perry, Green Bay Packers
Unrestricted, 25 years old, 6-foot-3, 265 pounds
2015 stats: 31 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble
The Packers declined to pick up the fifth-year option on the former first-round pick, sending him to the market. Perry has never been a regular starter in Green Bay and never played a full season. He hasn’t put up staggering numbers with just 12.5 career sacks in four years. Still, he’s a solid player who could draw some attention as he’s entering his prime years.

Bargains

DE Wallace Gilberry, Cincinnati Bengals
Unrestricted, 31 years old, 6-foot-2, 270 pounds
2015 stats: 23 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 pass defensed, 1 forced fumble
Gilberry has been an underrated player on the Bengals defense over the past four seasons. He’s notched 17.5 sacks during the past four years while competing with the likes of Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins. Gilberry lost his starting job last season after being a 16-game starter the year before. Taking one of your divisional foes’ quality players is never a bad thing.

OLB Bjoern Werner, Indianapolis Colts
Unrestricted, 25 years old, 6-foot-3, 255 pounds
2015 stats: 13 tackles, 0 sacks
Werner was a disappointment in Indy after being a first-round pick in 2013. He logged just 6.5 sacks in three seasons and cracked the starting lineup in just one of those years (2014). Last year, he played in just 10 games. The German-born Florida State product attributes his struggles to injuries.
