Who's Out There? Wide Receivers

Posted Feb 26, 2013

The Ravens don’t have much money to spend at wideout. But could they pick up a vet?

The Ravens appear set at wide receiver headed into next year. They aren’t slated to lose any from last season’s roster.

But there is media speculation that the Ravens could part ways with Anquan Boldin or Super Bowl standout Jacoby Jones for salary cap reasons.

If that happened, Baltimore could turn to a younger in-house wide receiver like Tandon Doss. Or the Ravens could be on the hunt for a bargain.

With that in mind, let’s check out this year’s free-agent class:

Brian Hartline, Miami Dolphins
Unrestricted (5th season), 26, 6-foot-2, 199 pounds
Hartline broke out last year with a 1,000-yard season (1,083 to be exact). He led the AFC in yardage for much of the first half of the season, thanks in large part to a 12-catch, 253-yard performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4. Hartline only hauled in one touchdown all year, however.

Danny Amendola, St. Louis Rams
Unrestricted, (5th season), 27, 5-11, 188
If the Ravens are looking for a possession receiver, Amendola would be a good option. The Rams have decided that they will not franchise him, meaning he’ll hit the market. Amendola has had injury issues (missed five games last year and 15 in 2011), but when he’s played he’s been productive. He still caught 63 passes for 666 yards and three scores last year.

Danario Alexander, San Diego Chargers
Unrestricted, (4th season), 24, 6-5, 217
Labeled a bust early on in his days in St. Louis, Alexander broke out last year with the Chargers. He averaged 17.8 yards per catch and hauled in seven touchdowns in just 10 games. The Ravens got a taste of the big-bodied, young wideout when he caught five passes for 74 yards against them last season. Alexander is a playmaker in the deep passing game.

Steve Breaston, Kansas City Chiefs
Unrestricted, (7th season), 29, 6-0, 189
Breaston signed a five-year deal with the Chiefs in 2011 but was released after just two seasons. He made just seven catches last year in 10 games and is looking to revitalize his career. Breaston topped 1,000 yards in 2008 while playing with Boldin in Arizona. He was over 700 yards each of the next three seasons before last year’s drop off.

Kevin Ogletree, Dallas Cowboys
Unrestricted, (5th season), 25, 6-1, 198
Ogletree broke onto the national scene in Dallas’ season-opener last year with eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. That was his best game by far. He finished with 32 catches for 436 yards and four catches in limited action. Playing behind Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, Ogletree didn’t get a lot of chances to show his potential.

Other Notable Names:

  • Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs
  • Ted Ginn, San Francisco 49ers
  • Greg Jennings, Green Bay Packers
  • Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Wes Welker, New England Patriots
