Who's Practicing, Who's Not vs. Chiefs

Posted Dec 16, 2015

Matt Schaub returned to practice. The Ravens had two offensive starters sidelined.

For the second straight week, the Ravens are delving into their game planning and preparation with uncertainty about the starting quarterback.

Matt Schaub missed Sunday’s game with a chest injury, and he could be sidelined again this week against the Chiefs. He returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant, and the Ravens want to see how he responds throughout the week.

“We’ll see how that goes for him. He’s going to be out here, and we’ll see how it goes,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said. “We’re in a situation right now where the quarterback situation is up in the air, obviously, with the injury to Matt and Joe [Flacco] before that.”

Jimmy Clausen started against the Seahawks Sunday, and he took most of the first-team reps during practice. Clausen threw for a career-high 274 passing yards in his Ravens debut last week, and he’s preparing to start if he ends up getting the nod again.

“All I’m trying to do out here is work as hard as I can and get better each day,” Clausen said. “That’s the only thing I can control. Like coach [Harbaugh] says every single day, ‘Control the things that you can control.’ All I can control is myself, and that’s [by] going out, practicing well and if given an opportunity to play on Sunday, playing well.”

The Ravens also added another piece to the quarterbacks room this week by signing Ryan Mallet. It’s unlikely that he would start Sunday, less than a week after getting signed, but Harbaugh said he could play at some point in the final three games.

“Ryan will be working the look team and getting accustomed to what we do,” Harbaugh said. “He was in meetings pretty much all day yesterday with [quarterbacks coach] Marty [Mornhinweg] and then studying on his own trying to learn our offense and learn this game plan to be ready in case he’s needed.”

Yanda, Gillmore Both Sit Out

The Ravens had two offensive starters sidelined, as tight end Crockett Gillmore (back) and right guard Marshal Yanda (ankle) both missed practice.

Gillmore could be headed to season-ending injured reserve because of his injury, which also kept him out last week.

“It’s not looking good for Crockett right now,” Harbaugh said.

It’s unclear how serious Yanda’s injury is, but the veteran lineman hardly ever misses a game. He finished Sunday’s game against Seattle, and the Ravens will sometimes give him extra time to recover because he doesn’t need the practice reps.

The other offensive starter dealing with an injury is new left tackle Kelechi Osemele, who was limited with a knee injury. He is still expected to play this week.

Arrington, McClellan Sit

The other players absent from practice for injury reasons were cornerback Kyle Arrington (back), outside linebacker Albert McClellan (ankle) and wide receiver Marlon Brown (back).

Brown has missed three straight games with the back injury.

Arrington and McClelllan both played last week, and it’s unclear how serious their injuries are.

The only other player who didn’t practice was outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who had a standard veteran off day.
