Wide Receiver Tavon Austin Shows Blazing Speed In 40-Yard Dash

Posted Feb 24, 2013

The West Virginia WR and Dunbar High School graduate officially clocked a 4.34-second 40-yard dash.

Tavon Austin created some headlines Friday at the combine when he boldly proclaimed that he’s the best all-around player in this year’s draft.

On Sunday, he stated his case on the field.

The dynamic West Virginia wide receiver and Dunbar High School graduate wowed scouts in the 40-yard dash, clocking an official time of 4.34 seconds. He also clocked an unofficial time of 4.25 seconds.

“You want to talk about one of the most electric players I've ever seen in college football,” said NFL Network analyst and draft expert Mike Mayock.

"In the NFL, it's all about matchups, and this young man is a matchup nightmare. What I love about (Austin), he's got good hands. We already know he can run, we know how quick he is. I know he's tough. And he's a game-changer."

Austin ran the second-fastest time of any wide receiver, as Texas’ Marquise Goodwin officially clocked in at 4.27 seconds.

Austin was already regarded as one of the fastest players in this year’s draft class, and his performance Sunday proved it. That time may move him up draft boards, as he’s been projected as a mid-to-late round draft pick.

Some mock drafts have him linked to the Ravens at pick No. 32, and Austin said he would love the opportunity to come back home to Baltimore.

“I think that would be a blessing,” he said.

Another Baltimore product, Virginia Tech’s Corey Fuller, also had a strong showing in the 40. The college track star and Woodlawn High School graduate officially ran it in 4.43 seconds, seventh best out of the receivers.

Fuller, who has been training with Austin in Orlando, said Friday that his goal was to run under 4.35 seconds.
