Fans Upset By Disrespectful ESPN Headline There is plenty of bulletin board material out there for the Ravens to choose from, as few, if any, pundits are giving the Ravens a chance to beat the Broncos Sunday. But this one may take the cake. ESPN published on its NFL landing page a picture of Ray ...
There was a time when the Ravens were more familiar with the police blotter than they wanted. It was a dark passage, and I’m sure the Ravens would love to expunge it from their history. At some point, though, the narrative flipped. The Ravens’ locker room became a place that squelched act-out ...
Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne took exception with Ray Lewis ’ final “Squirrel Dance” at the end of Sunday’s playoff game. " I saw it as disrespectful ," Wayne said Monday on WNDE-AM in Indianapolis. "They'd already had a tribute every quarter.” Lewis “loves” Wayne, but he disagreed with him on ...

NFL Investigating Harbaugh Bump With Official The NFL announced Monday that it is investigating instances from Week 3 in which coaches clashed with replacement officials, including an inadvertent bump with a ref that Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh acknowledged and apologized for Sunday night. “We are reviewing incidents from yesterday’s games involving the game officials and Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh, New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick and Washington Redskins Offensive Coordinator Kyle Shanahan,” the NFL said in statement. The league issued its first penalties on coaches for referee incidents to Denver’s John Fox and Jack Del Rio, who received $30,000 and $25,000 fines respectively, for their Week 2 behavior. Harbaugh was asked about the NFL’s replacement officials after the Ravens walk through Monday night. “I really can’t touch on it,” he told reporters. “I think there [are] a lot of good officials in these crews. It’s just going to be hard for those guys to all be on the same page with the history of the National Football League and all that in a few weeks, but there [are] a lot of very talented officials that do a great job and they’re really great communicators and everything. I think there’s a lot of talent there, but the task is tough and they are working real hard at it.” Harbaugh admitted Sunday night after the Ravens’ win over the Patriots the he made contact with a referee, Rodney Russell, but explained that it was accidental while he was motioning for a timeout in the fourth quarter. He was hit with a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct with two minutes, 23 seconds left in the game. The moment was captured in the picture to the right. “ I didn’t mean to bump him ,” Harbaugh said Sunday night. “I wanted to call a timeout, so I apologize for bumping, but the intent was to call a timeout.” Belichick Explains His Side Of The Story Onlookers were taken aback to see Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick grab an official after Justin Tucker ’s game-winning field goal. Many respected analysts are predicting Belichick will be fined. After initially declining to speak about the incident, which has gotten a massive amount of attention throughout the sports world, Belichick gave his side of the story, unprompted, in a press conference Monday. You can read the full statement at the Boston Herald, but here is a snippet: “By rule, if the ball isn’t over the crossbar, and it’s either inside or outside of the upright, that’s reviewable. If it’s over the crossbar, or over the top of the upright rather, then it’s not reviewable. But I couldn’t tell from my angle when the ball crossed the crossbar where it was. So I didn’t know whether or not that play was going to be under review or whether it wasn’t. So when the game was over, I went out, and I was really looking for an explanation from the officials as to whether or not the play was under review. I did try to get the official’s attention as he was coming off the field to ask that, but I really wasn’t able to do that. “I’ve coached in this league a long time and never been penalized, never had any incidents with officials or anything like that. I have never meant any disrespect or in any way tried to abuse or be disrespectful to the officials and the job that they do. I’m trying to get an explanation for obviously an important call, play, in that game. That’s the number one thing between coaches and officials. It’s always at the forefront. It’s just communication of what’s going on, of what’s happening.” Ravens Streaker Has Anti-Bullying Message I guess if you’re going to “streak” (which I don’t recommend or encourage as it is against the law), you should at least have a purpose. Also, is it really streaking if you’re wearing clothes and a cape? Apparently there is more to the story behind the Ravens Batman streaker that interrupted the Ravens-Patriots showdown Sunday night. He wasn’t just some drunken fan that suddenly decided to get a little crazy to entertain his friends. No, Mark Harvey took to the field at M&T Bank Stadium with an anti-bullying message , according to Mike Cole of the New England Sports Network. He had the words, “Don’t be a bully, be a Super Hero” written across his bare chest as he stormed the field wearing a cape, sunglasses, a hat, black shorts and black tennis shoes. “The streaker, who also crashed an Orioles game this season with a similar message and similar dance moves, apparently does this to raise awareness for bullying,” Cole wrote. “He even has a website devoted to spreading the message.” Harvey has certainly gotten everyone’s attention, and has a website pushing his cause: BiggerThanBullying.com. "Bullying is a real problem in America, and I am here to stop it," Harvey says on the website. "We all have super powers and it's time to put them to use. I'm talking about the power we have to make friends, stand-up for one another, and ultimately make 'bullying' just another word in the dictionary." However, Harvey may want to find a legal and safe way to get his positive message across. He was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct. Per WBAL, the Ravens said Harvey “created a dangerous situation and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Rice Upset By Tasteless Tweet To T. Smith Running back Ray Rice wasn’t happy to see a tweet that appeared to be directed to receiver Torrey Smith Sunday night, just hours after he lost his 19-year-old brother, Tevin, in a motorcycle accident. Twitter user, @KatieBrady12 , crossed the line when she wrote, “Hey, Smith, how about you call your bro and tell him all about your wi--- ohhhh. Wait. #TooSoon?.” Really? You went there? In addition to intense backlash from many Ravens fans on Twitter, Rice also responded to @KatieBrady12 writing: “smh u are terrible I hope you know the word karma .” The Twitter account has now been switched to “private.” Internet users believe the Twitter handle belongs to an employee of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and have reached out to the university in complaint , reports John-John Williams IV of The Baltimore Sun. The reporter reached out to Johns Hopkins, and received this statement from a spokesman: “Our deepest sympathies are with Torrey Smith and his family. The social media comment that made light of the Smith family’s loss represented the thoughts of one individual. It does not in any way represent the Johns Hopkins community," said Dennis O'Shea, spokesman for Johns Hopkins. ‘Definitely’ A Way To Keep Rice Involved In No-Huddle Rice carried the ball just 10 times in the season-opening win against Cincinnati (which was a blowout so Rice was wisely placed on the sidelines in garbage time), and then added only 16 more carries in a loss to the Eagles. Questions began to surface about whether there was a place for Rice in the Ravens’ new no-huddle offense. Well, after seeing Rice excel on the ground versus the Patriots, a game in which the Ravens continued to use the no-huddle, The Sun’s Matt Vensel says there is “definitely” a way to keep the Pro Bowl running back involved. Of his 20 carries, which went for 101 yards, 13 of them came while the Ravens were in the no-huddle. He churned out 66 yards and a touchdown while rushing in the no-huddle, according to Vensel. Plus he was targeted five times in the passing game, catching all of them for 49 yards. “[The Ravens] showed they can keep one of the best running backs in football involved without taking their foot off the gas pedal. That's a pretty scary thought – one that the offensive coaching staff needs to keep fresh in everyone's minds going forward.” Already Pulling For Flacco-Ryan Super Bowl Just three weeks into the season and CBSSports.com’s Clark Judge is already pulling for a Ravens-Falcons Super Bowl. “[A]nd I'll tell you why : The quarterbacks. Finally, mercifully, fittingly, a Super Bowl could settle the debate over which is better,” he wrote. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco have been linked since they were both selected in the first round of the 2008 draft, and they both continue to get better each year. If he had to take one of the two quarterbacks into the Super Bowl for his team, Judge says he would take Flacco for one “compelling” reason: He wins big games, including in the playoffs, and Ryan has yet to do so. Judge acknowledged that Ryan is the face of the Atlanta franchise and has better passing statistics, but Flacco has a 5-4 playoff record and is the first quarterback in league history to start and win playoff games in each of his first four pro seasons. “But this isn't fantasy football, people,” wrote Judge. “This is a league where you're measured by what you do in January and February, and, no offense, but Matt Ryan hasn't done diddly-poo. … “So whom do you want -- Flacco in Baltimore or Ryan in Atlanta? I'll take the quarterback I can trust when I need to win most. Give me Joe Flacco.” Quick Hits Peter King’s Quote of the Week comes from linebacker Ray Lewis , who was shown on cameras before the Patriots game saying: "You know what we're here for! Revenge! Rice, Terrible Towel Worth 1,000 Words After their third consecutive win against the Steelers, safety Ed Reed and several Ravens players were reportedly walking toward the visiting locker room singing "Renegade," the Steelers' adopted anthem by Styx, used to pump up their home crowd in crucial game moments. Others, including running back Ray Rice , could be seen with the Steelers “Terrible Towel” draped over their heads. Several media took note – and one thought it provided the imagery of something bigger happening between the bitter rivals. The singing, the towels, Sunday’s slugfest victory and the recent Ravens’ winning streak are all signs that the rivalry scales are tipping in Baltimore’s direction , says ESPN’s Ashley Fox. “Renegade? Perfect,” Fox wrote. “What the Ravens did to the Steelers on Sunday … was part vengeance, part message: We're not going anywhere. You're getting older. Now is our time. “The Baltimore-Pittsburgh rivalry won't truly tilt until this generation of Ravens gets at least one tally on the Super Bowl scoreboard. The Ravens know that. But they also know that there has been a shift, however subtle, in the rivalry. Baltimore knows it can beat Pittsburgh, at home or on the road, and that hasn't always been the case.” Heinz Field has a reputation for being one of the most hostile road environments, with the Steelers losing only two of their last 14 home games. Those two losses have both come against Baltimore. The Ravens do just about everything they can to overcome those harsh conditions in Pittsburgh, including playing “Renegade” at practice the week prior to a matchup. They dance, sing and get pumped up to it during the game too. The offense had perhaps its best play of the second half immediately after the song was first played, a 23-yard strike to Anquan Boldin . Terrell Suggs loves going to the stands to allow fans to yell and mock him; he plays into it and wants to be the bad guy. Draping the terrible towel over their heads may be another sign that the Ravens are no longer intimidated by a team that has dominated the division and gone to the Super Bowl three times since Ben Roethlisberger started his career in 2004. “No one from Baltimore will say that the Ravens own the Steelers, but the pendulum seems to be swinging,” Fox wrote. “The plan is in place. The Ravens know Pittsburgh is aging. They want to see whether the Steelers under Mike Tomlin can draft well enough to restock the defense and improve the offensive line. The Ravens aren't so sure that the Steelers can, and they want to seize control, put Pittsburgh in their rearview mirror and dominate a division that the Steelers have owned for so long.” Baltimore isn’t talking about the potential new lead in the rivalry – they know they have plenty of work to do until they obtain the success Pittsburgh has enjoyed in recent history. That’s why Rice is still “pissed off” even with an 8-2 record. He said the Ravens can play better and will continue to chase perfection. Until then, Rice said the Steelers keep the title as the division’s best. "To be honest, I don't know if there's ever going to be a tilt until we actually win a few Super Bowls, and that's just something they can always hang over our head," Rice said, per Fox. "That's just what it is now. … That's something that's always sticking in the back of my head since I've been a pro. “We know the road had to go through Pittsburgh, and they had our number for the last few years. Now it feels good we're capable of beating this team at their place. Right now, we've won the last three against them, last year and this year, so it feels pretty good." Report: Roethlisberger Won’t Play At M&T Bank Steelers doctors believe starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss three weeks with shoulder and rib injuries, according to an ESPN report, which would force him to miss the second Ravens-Steelers game at M&T Bank Stadium in two weeks. Pittsburgh won’t completely rule Big Ben out and are “hopeful, though hardly optimistic,” that he could play during that Dec. 2 showdown. The injury to his first rib poses a threat to his aorta and surrounding arteries, vessels and soft tissue, according to the ESPN source, adding that Roethlisberger was in as much pain Friday as he was Monday. The news won’t make Suggs happy, who said Sunday night’s win was “bittersweet” without Roethlisberger playing. “He’s going to do everything in his power to get back. This game ain’t the same [without him],” Sizzle told Rachel Nichols as he walked off the field. “I’m glad we won, but I wish we had won with him playing . “Hopefully he’ll be out there when they come to Baltimore. We’ll duke it out for another 15 rounds.” Suggs Explains Getting Outrun By A Statue Backup quarterback Byron Leftwich is supposed to be immobile. He’s supposed to be slow. Even he said of himself earlier this week, “Let’s be honest, I’m not going to be able to make two or three guys miss, roll it all the way to the left. I’m not physically capable of doing that.” But that’s exactly what he did (except he rolled to the right) on the game’s opening drive, outrunning Suggs to the sideline and then breaking a tackle from hard-hitting safety Bernard Pollard . His 31-yard scramble was the only Steelers touchdown of the game. What happened Suggs? “That’s what we didn’t expect him to do. So it was just kind of like, ‘Go ahead and rush. He’s a statue, you gonna get there.’ He proved us wrong,” said the Reigning Defensive Player of the Year, who recently returned from Achilles tendon surgery. “ I thought I could catch him . I guess the tendon ain’t as good as I thought it would be just yet.” Leftwich poked fun at himself after the game: "I am not a slow quarterback. I'm just the slowest black quarterback." Did Defense Catch Break? Or Is It Championship Caliber? The Ravens wouldn’t be celebrating their two-game lead in the AFC North this morning if it weren’t for the dominant and surprising play from the defense. The 27 th -ranked group suddenly decided it would play like Ravens defenses of old, allowing only a field goal in 59 minutes, 13 seconds after giving up the early Leftwich touchdown. “[S]omething happened, something to help turn back the clock , help make them feel like those old defenses, the ones that used to make quarterbacks quiver and yards hard to get,” wrote CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco. “The Pittsburgh Steelers showed up on the schedule. “For one night, this vagabond group of Ravens, minus the big name (not game) of Ray Lewis , and scarred by injuries to others, turned back the clock and won a game with defense.” What does this all mean going forward? The jury is still out. Prisco says the defensive play may need an asterisk because Roethlisberger was on the sideline. But that seems like flawed logic, when Baltimore was missing two of its top three corners and Lewis, plus Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs were not 100 percent. Some of the biggest plays came from cornerback Corey Graham , who started the season as the No. 4 corner on the depth chart. “Just don't forget the fact that the Ravens only have six starters from the defense that played in the AFC championship game 10 months ago,” ESPN’s Jamison Hensley wrote. OK – so no asterisk next to the win. But Hensley asks if the unit is championship caliber. “Let's see how this group fares against the likes of Philip Rivers, Eli Manning and Peyton Manning over the next few weeks before getting into hyperbole,” the AFC North blogger wrote. “What the Baltimore defense showed Sunday night was it's good enough to win this division and get the Ravens to the playoffs when the offense disappears once again on the road.” Hines Ward: Harbaugh Is 'Cocky' Remember when retired Steelers receiver Hines Ward didn’t get a warm welcome when he came to Baltimore for NBC broadcasting duties during the Ravens-Patriots game? He posted a message on Facebook asking Baltimoreans, “Can't we all just get along?” With comments like the one he made last week, Ravens fans are going to have a hard time showing a little more kindness to Baltimore’s No. 1 villain. When asked last week on his TV show about the fake field goal the Ravens ran against the Raiders when they were up 41-17, Hines didn’t hold back his true feelings. ( Hat tip: CSNBaltimore.com ) “That’s just coach Harbaugh. He’s just a cocky coach who just don’t care about anything,” Ward said. “Sometimes that can come back and bite you in the tail. You look at guys like [New York Jets Head Coach] Rex Ryan who guarantees he’s going to win the Super Bowl, guys are going to be geared up for you week in, week out … especially when you’re down. “For Coach Harbaugh, that’s unnecessary. He already had control of the game. To run a fake field goal? I do know that [Steelers Head Coach Mike] Tomlin will remember that especially coming into this ballgame.” Quick Hits Clark Judge on the Ravens picking up returner/receiver Jacoby Jones in the offseason: “Talk about one of the year's most underrated moves . Getting Jones gave the Baltimore Ravens another weapon, with Jones producing his third touchdown off a return Sunday night. At some point, people are just going to stop kicking to the guy.” [CBSSports.com] Steelers Receiver Antonio Brown could be back for next Ravens game in two weeks. [ProFootballTalk.com] Paul Kruger was a nightmare for Mike Adams . Wrote Ralph N. Paulk: If the Mike Adams-Paul Kruger matchup had been a heavyweight fight, the officials would have stopped the bout in the first quarter.
