Johnny Unitas

Ring Of Honor - Earnest Byner

Johnny Unitas is not only considered one of the greatest players in Baltimore football history, but also one of the greatest in the entire history of the game. He retired after an 18-year career as the NFL leader for passes attempted (5,186), completed (2,830), yards gained (40,239), most seasons with 3,000+ yards (3), most games with 300+ yards (26) and most TD passes (290). He passed away on Sept. 11, 2002, and was posthumously inducted into the Smyth Jewelers' Ravens Ring of Honor a little over a month later on Oct. 20. To further honor his impact on the game of football and recognize his importance to the city of Baltimore, Ravens owners Art Modell and Steve Bisciotti commissioned a bronze statue of Unitas' likeness to be placed in front of Gate A at M&T Bank Stadium in the re-named "Unitas Plaza."
