Late For Work 5/29: Joe Linta Speaks Again. Should This Be Private?

Linta Speaks Again. Should This Be Private?
Agent Joe Linta took to the radio waves to defend his comment that "I've never in my life seen a dumber move" than when the Ravens decided to wait to give quarterback Joe Flacco a contract extension because it ultimately cost them $35 million.

Linta explained his remarks aren't new to the Ravens because he's told them the same thing privately. He decided to say something publicly because he grew weary of misperceptions about his client being "greedy" for signing such a big contract.

"I'd been hearing that for about three months now," Linta told 105.7 The Fan. "And after a while you get sick of it because Joe is a consummate pro, he's a phenomenal player, a great father, a great husband, and a great son. And to be honest with you in sort of a parental mode I'd kind of gotten sick of the intimations that he was greedy and that type of thing. And I said, 'Look, I have no sympathy for the Ravens. They chose this. They walked away from the deal in August.'

"Look, they're brilliant guys. They won a Super Bowl. But I thought it was dumb. Look, if that's the worst thing that they get called in their existence, then they got a pretty good situation. They know how I feel. Everything I was quoted, I told them that in August. This is not news to them. It's how I feel. I'm allowed to have my opinion."

The month of May is typically one of the slowest times of the offseason for NFL reporters, and Linta believes the media sensationalized his comments so they could have something to talk about.

While he admitted that he could have found a better way to phrase his opinion, he stands by it and says strong language is part of the business. Linta said the Ravens have said worse things to him.

"You don't think they called me a lot worse than that over the last couple years?" Linta said. "It's part of the business. You argue. You fight. You have disagreements. It's nothing personal. [Ravens Vice President of Football Administration] Pat Moriarty is welcome in my house every day of the week. I love the guy. I absolutely adore that guy. He's a pro, he's a great guy. I think the world of him. But we're allowed to disagree, correct?"

"If I need to issue a public apology, if I offended them by using the word 'dumb,' then so be it. That's fine. Hey, I'm sorry. But I'm allowed to have my opinion. Like I said, they've called me a lot worse than that."

But is there a difference between saying harsh things privately versus publicly?'s Mike Florio believes Linta should have kept the arguing and tough language behind closed doors.

"[T]he Ravens haven't called Linta bad things publicly," Florio wrote. "That's the difference here.  Arguing privately is one thing.  Arguing to the media is another.

"Linta definitely isn't dumb. He went to Yale. Deep down, he surely understands that nothing good comes from taking gratuitous potshots in the press. And he's trying to minimize the situation to ensure that there won't be any lingering ill will."

Former Ravens QB Finnerty Passes Away

Former Ravens quarterback Cullen Finnerty was found dead after going missing Sunday while fishing in Michigan, according to multiple media reports including WZZM-TV, WOOD-TV and

Finnerty, who was active for two games for the Ravens in 2007, was reportedly found under a tree near where his boat was discovered at the Bray Creek State Forest Campground in Webber Township.

The 30 year old's death does not appear connected to foul play, according to reports, and he indicated to family in a phone call Sunday night that he was under distress, saying he was afraid and asked for someone to pick him up. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed.

The Ravens signed Finnerty as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He never appeared in a game with the team, but was promoted to the active roster the final two games of the regular season when starting quarterback Kyle Boller was injured.

Dumervil's Denver Home On Market

Elvis Dumervil is still tying up some loose ends in Denver after he left the city to sign with the Ravens in March.

His four-bedroom, seven bathroom home in Castle Rock, Colo., is on the market, per (hat tip The 6,199-square-foot home is listed at $2.7 million.

"Dumervil can afford to carry the property, for a while," wrote Florio. "He has made plenty of money over the years, and he'll make $8.5 million in 2013.

"He'll also be able to check on the place in early September, when the Ravens launch the 2013 season with a trip to Denver."

Roethlisberger: Tough Seeing Ravens Win Super Bowl

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a rough 2012 season with rib and shoulder injuries plaguing him. His team finished on a three-game losing streak to go 8-8 overall and miss the playoffs.

"I just had a bad year," Roethlisberger said.

Things didn't get better when he was forced to watch his top rival – the Ravens – win the Super Bowl.

"When it's not you, you never like it," Roethlisberger told Jarrett Bell of USA Today. "And when it's someone in your division, it's always tougher.

"It's just motivation to be better this year."
