Ravens RISE High School Showdown & Coach Of The Week

During each week of the regular season, the Baltimore Ravens will recognize one local high school football game as its Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown.

This week's Showdown features the Century (Sykesville, Md.) Knights (4-3) at the Winters Mill (Westminster, Md.) Falcons (1-6). Kickoff on Friday evening (10/23) is 7 p.m. The Knights aim to extend their current three-game winning streak over the Falcons, which began in 2012.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the field for this week's Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown will be decorated with banners and goal post wraps from the NFL's "A Crucial Catch" campaign. In addition, both teams will sport pink receiving gloves and shoelaces, while the cheerleaders will have pink pompoms. All items have been donated by the Ravens. The American Cancer Society will also be on-site to help promote the campaign and accept donations, while Zeta Tau Alpha will distribute pink ribbons. Fans in attendance are encouraged to join Poe by wearing pink to the game.

In conjunction with The Baltimore Sun, a voting poll is established each week to help select which Showdown will receive a visit to the game from Ravens Cheerleaders and mascot Poe, as well as a monetary donation for both school's respective athletic programs. Following the matchup, each game will be showcased through a detailed game recap and photo gallery.

Voting is now open for next week's Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown and will close Tuesday (10/27). The games available for Week 9 are:

  • Patterson @ Lake Clifton (3 PM)
  • Bluford Drew Jemison @ Reginald Lewis (3:15 PM)
  • Dunbar @ Poly (6 PM)

Biff Poggi, varsity head football coach of the Gilman (Baltimore, Md.) Greyhounds, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Now in its 19th year of existence, Poggi is the seventh recipient of the award in 2015.

Last Friday, Gilman (7-1) earned another convincing victory over their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) opponent after defeating the Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.) Cavaliers, 48-7. The Greyhounds built a 42-0 halftime lead, paced by two first half rushing touchdowns each from RB Antonio Dupree and RB Dorian Maddox. Gilman's ground attack tallied an impressive 324 rushing yards in the game.

The Greyhounds have outscored their MIAA foes by a combined 160-29 margin in just four league contests in 2015. Gilman hosts the Friendship Collegiate Academy (Washington, D.C.) Knights this Friday (10/23) in a non-conference showdown.

Each week during the season, the Ravens honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance at the Ravens-Chiefs home game on Dec. 20 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year. In addition, each coach receives a donation to the school's football program and an award from Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

These initiatives are just a piece of Ravens RISE, the team's football outreach initiative presented by Wendy's. The program impacts a range of area football players from youth to high school, providing them with a year-round opportunity to "Play Like A Raven" through clinics, tournaments, grants, ticket donations and exclusive opportunities to play at M&T Bank Stadium and interact with Ravens players and coaches.
