Marc Anthony's parents had no idea what to name their baby.
They were religious, so they liked the name Mark. But they wanted to put a twist on it, so they went with a "C" at the end.
Palm to forehead.
Marc Anthony is the same name as the famous salsa singer, producer and actor. It's also the name of the ancient Roman politician and general who shares a famous love story with Cleopatra.
As soon as the Ravens' seventh-round draft pick was announced, I yelled out some joke about the singer. As you can imagine, I'm not the only one to ever make the connection.
"I hear stuff about my name all the time," the Ravens' rookie cornerback said. "It's kind of a way to relate to people, an ice-breaker. But it gets kind of repetitive."
So what are the most common jokes?
"I get, 'Can you sing?' I get, 'How's J-Lo?' I get, 'How's Cleopatra?'"
Anthony, the singer, was once married to megastar Jennifer Lopez. While the Ravens' Anthony said he "absolutely" does not like his music, they do share one commonality.
"Besides the fact that he dated J-Lo, I have no interest," the seventh-round draft pick said. "Who doesn't have interest in J-Lo?"
Google "Marc Anthony" and you won't find anything on football until the sixth page.
Here's to hoping Marc Anthony climbs the charts. (Not the salsa charts)
