Transcripts: Ravens Postgame Quotes Week 4

Head Coach John Harbaugh

Opening Statement:All right, wow, what a football game. It's hard to remember right after the game what happened in the game. It doesn't really matter now. The finish is what counts. The finish is what our guys were able to accomplish. I couldn't be more proud of them as a bunch of coaches, guys, players and fans, too. I'm sure a lot of fans in Baltimore right now that stuck with us all the way through this game, kept faith, had guts and maintained hope. That was just a great win for us. The defense gets two fourth-down stops in overtime. The offense grinds it out, made a couple of catches and a couple throws. In the end, the run game grounded it out and put us in position. I can tell you a quick story, with Justin Tucker's field goal. We were having a conversation about maybe trying to draw them offsides, get a little closer and get the first down. Joe Flacco comes over to me and says, "Just let him win the game. Good call."

Re: Going for field goal vs. trying for the first-down:

Well not really to go for it. The thought was to try and get them to jump offsides and not have a play. I don't think for one second that they would have. It's a disciplined team. Justin Tucker is a great kicker. It's a tough venue. He made a tough kick. Not just him but the whole protection because there was not a lot of rush. Sam Koch and Morgan Cox did a good job too.

Re: The value of having a good kicker:

In this league, most games come to three points. We have a great kicker.

Re: Smith's two sacks:

They were huge. I have to go back and look at the exact scenarios. We backed him up a couple times, field position-wise. Mike Vick is a tough guy to get down. He's a quarterback and he's a running back. He's a playmaker. Those guys do a great job in holding the blocks. He did a great job becoming a running back. Those two sacks Smith made, he's a very good athlete. If you get a guy like that down, that says a lot.

What did you see that made a difference with the running game today?

I'll have to go back and look. I thought Juan Castillo and our offensive coaches along with Marc Trestman and Andy Bischoff did a great job of game planning the thing. I think our offensive line did a great job. When they have a great nose guard I think Jeremy Zuttah did a great job of holding the nose guard at bay at least and holding the line of scrimmage. I think we did a good job on the backside of cutting off their defensive ends, especially Cameron Heyward. I saw he had the Ironhead black patches on. I love Ironhead Heyward. He was at Pitt when I was coaching there for a year with my dad and Mike Offree. Cutting those guys off is a challenge, and we did a good job of that.

What were you thinking when you didn't convert before the two-minute warning?

I don't know. I was just thinking we have to get a stop here. I think they might have hit the seven route the next play to Antonio Brown possibly. We went for it a number of times. We went for it with a fake field goal. You want to be bold. You want to be aggressive. Their defense is stout. It is just football in this league.

Was the defense getting those fourth quarter stops redemption for them?

I don't know about that last part of it. Well, do you mean the fourth quarter stops late in the game compared to the history of the last couple years. I got it. We're dredging all that up again! That's what they said they wanted to do. They wanted to find a way to finish. That's the thing our guys did. Our defense, not just once, not just twice, not just three times found a way. The same thing goes for our offense and Joe. Joe's under pressure. These guys can rush the passer. They're bringing blitzes from every different angle. He's hanging in there, scrambling, making throws and changing protections. I thought all three phases did that.

Can you relay the feeling of getting that first win?

Words can't describe. I think we all find in life that every adversity that you walk through is the toughest one in your life when you're in it. Ours is just beginning. We're 1-3. We have to play in a little more than a week against the Cleveland Browns who are a very good football team in the division once again. We know where we're at. We know what we have to overcome. You can't get two until you get one. This one was a long time coming. We're happy to get it. Right, Joe? Right, Tuck? Joe is going to be Tuck's agent now. Just let him win it. You guys want to hear from these guys, right?

Re: On his opinion of trying to get the defense offsides:

Yes, I didn't know what they were talking about. I think maybe they thought about going for it. [The Steelers defense] did a pretty good job of being stout all day. We hit a couple up the middle in a few situations early in the game, and then we tried one on third down and then a QB sneak. They were kind of on to it at that point. I thought if anything on third down they would try to take a shot. We tried to line it up and get the first down. It's hard when the game is tied and you know you can win the game with a field goal.

Re: On if he ever played in a regular season game with the group of receivers that played in the fourth quarter:

I'm sure I had at some point during training camp when a couple of those guys were taking the day off. It hasn't been much. It's not my job to look to see who we have out there. It's my job to see whoever that guy is, is open, and give him a chance to make the catch.  We made enough plays down the stretch to do that.

Re: On if he knew as soon as he kicked it that it was good:

Definitely.  No matter which end you spin it, which end of the stadium you're kicking at, it's a tough stadium to kick in. It's a tough place to play in. It's one of the most electric stadiums to play in in the National Football League. So to be able to come in and win in such a dramatic fashion with just a consummate team effort, it's really special. It'll be one heck of a plane ride back to Baltimore.

Re: On if this win will jumpstart the team:

I think so. This first win for us should catalyze us to go on to big things. We're not getting ahead of ourselves. There's a lot of stuff we can learn—just from this game. The nature of this league is that you are going to play in tight games. We played in this first quarter of the season and we're 1-3. Any one of those games could have turned out any which way. It just so happened that tonight we made the plays we needed to make.
