The veteran safety was added to the roster to replace Patriots safety Devin McCourty, who will be playing in the Super Bowl instead. Chiefs safety Eric Berry will also be replaced by Broncos’ Darian Stewart, who is a former Raven.
This will be Weddle’s fourth-career trip to the Pro Bowl. The 32-year-old defender is well deserving of a Pro Bowl nod; he was considered one of the league’s biggest snubs when the all-star rosters were initially announced last month.
“It is always an honor to attend the Pro Bowl and represent your team,” Weddle said. “It was a long and trying season for me, both mentally and physically, especially with moving my family and starting over with a new team. I gave it my all every step of the way.”
In his first season with the Ravens, Weddle registered 89 tackles, four interceptions, one sack and a forced fumble. He was the NFL’s highest-graded safety by Pro Football Focus.
“While I would take a few more wins over this accolade, it’s nice to be recognized as one of the NFL’s best,” Weddle said. “A lot of people had a hand in this – friends, family, teammates, coaches, management and our great fans. I thank them all.
“I am looking forward to an even better season next year. I just turned 32 and am more motivated than ever to help my team win. I know 2017 is going to be my best year yet.”
Weddle is now the sixth Raven to be selected to this year’s Pro Bowl, joining kicker
The game will take place Sunday in Orlando at 8 p.m.
