Greg Roman Officially Joins Ravens Coaching Staff

Posted Jan 12, 2017

The former Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator will become the Ravens senior offensive assistant and tight ends coach. He will bring his experience in game planning, a track record of rushing attack success and a familiarity with Baltimore and the Harbaughs.

The Ravens have officially hired Greg Roman to be a senior offensive assistant/tight ends coach.

As such, Richard Angulo has been promoted from tight ends coach to assistant offensive line coach.

Roman, 44, is entering his 20th season in NFL coaching and has been an offensive coordinator for the past six years with the San Francisco 49ers (2011-2014) and Buffalo Bills (2015-2016). He was let go in September by Rex Ryan after the Bills got off to an 0-2 start.

“Greg had other opportunities over the last few days, and we’re pleased that he has decided to join the Ravens,” Head Coach John Harbaugh stated. “I’ve known Greg for a long time, and he’s a hard worker and very creative. Our football team just got better.”

Roman brings a lot of game-planning experience from his time as offensive coordinator, which he will bring to the table in working under Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. He will help the Ravens both in the rushing and passing game.

Roman also coached tight ends during his time with the Houston Texans (2002-2005) and again with Stanford (2009-2010), so he brings experience in that area.

Roman also helped 49ers tight end Vernon Davis earn Pro Bowl honors in 2013 after recording 52 catches for 850 yards and a career-high-tying 13 touchdowns. Davis compiled 26 receiving touchdowns during Roman’s four seasons.

“Getting a veteran coach like Greg Roman to join our staff is a coup for the Ravens,” Mornhinweg said. “He is a very sound coach and a good team player who will help us build our offense.”

During his time as an offensive coordinator, Roman built a track record of assembling strong rushing attacks. His rushing units finished in the top four of the league in each of his last four full seasons.

Baltimore finished 28th in the league in rushing yards per game (91.4) and 21st in rushing yards per attempt (4.0) this season. They have set franchise lows in rushing attempts each of the past two years. That has prompted a call for more balance next season from Harbaugh and Owner Steve Bisciotti.

Roman already has Baltimore and Harbaugh connections. He was an offensive line assistant in Baltimore for two seasons (2006-2007), just before Harbaugh arrived.

He has a close relationship with Jim Harbaugh as the two first coached together at Stanford. In 2010, Roman was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which is given annually to the nation's top college football assistant coach.

When Jim Harbaugh was hired as the head coach of the 49ers in 2011, he tabbed Roman to be his offensive coordinator. Roman was calling plays for the 49ers when they battled the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. The two coached together for all four years in San Francisco before Harbaugh went to the University of Michigan.

“I am very excited to join the Ravens’ staff and help Coach Harbaugh and Marty Mornhinweg in any way I can,” Roman said. “The building blocks are there for this team, and we’re all looking forward to being better. I’ve been with the Ravens before and know firsthand what a great organization they have. My family and I are happy to be back.”

Roman was a two-year starter on the defensive line at John Carroll University. The New Jersey native and his wife, Dana, have three children, Connor, Gregory and Emily Grace.
