Ravens Re-Sign Running Back Justin Forsett

Posted Sep 5, 2016

After releasing the veteran on Saturday, Baltimore picked him back up just two days later.

It was an odd series of events, but Justin Forsett is a Raven again.

The Ravens officially re-signed the veteran tailback Monday afternoon after releasing him during Saturday's cuts to 53. The Ravens now have their full roster set.

Forsett was the Ravens' starting running back last year before breaking his arm midway through the season. He has been treated as the group's leader this summer as he returned from the injury.

However, the Ravens did some crafty roster maneuvering, while taking somewhat of a risk, to release Forsett and bring him back.

While Forsett and returner Devin Hester were free agents, the Ravens were able to keep safety Matt Elam and defensive tackle Carl Davis on the 53-man roster long enough to make them eligible for activation off injured reserve later this season.

And once the details of Forsett's contract are reported, fans will know if the Ravens got their running back at a lower rate. Forsett was entering the second year of a three-year, $9 million deal.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said Forsett looked like his 2014 Pro Bowl self this summer. The veteran player is coming off a year in which his average yards per carry dropped from 5.4 yards to 4.2. He had 641 rushing yards and two touchdowns before his injury.

It remains to be seen what the Ravens' pecking order at running back will be Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, but with just two other backs -- Terrance West and Buck Alllen -- Forsett will have a role.

At the very least, Forsett will continue to bring a strong leadership presence in the locker room. He is one of the most respected players on the team and teammates and fans were excited to see him return.
