What You Missed vs. Miami Dolphins

Posted Dec 6, 2016

Terrell Suggs plays hard to the bitter end. Clean pocket for Joe Flacco. Perfect form from Zachary Orr, Brandon Williams blows up Laremy Tunsil.

The Ravens took down the Miami Dolphins 38-6 at M&T Bank Stadium Sunday to improve to 7-5 on the season.

Baltimore's offense had its best outing of the season and the defense shut down the Dolphins offense, as the Ravens played their most complete game of the season.

It was a fun game to take in, so let’s review some of the plays you may have missed celebrating the victory. (All of these plays were viewed using NFL Game Pass, which is available for fans to purchase.)

Suggs Plays Hard To Bitter End

The win over Miami was the Ravens’ most lopsided victory in years, and the Ravens were finally able to relax a bit in the fourth quarter. But veteran defender Terrell Suggs wasn’t interested in coming out of the game early, and Head Coach John Harbaugh urged reporters this week to look at Suggs’ final few plays in the game. Suggs played all the way through the Ravens’ final series, and the play below shows the last defensive snap. Even with the game well in hand, Suggs was still playing hard and forced an incompletion by blowing by left tackle Brandon Albert.

Check Out Clean Pocket For Flacco

Quarterback Joe Flacco had his best performance of the season against Miami and finished with four touchdown passes on the day. Flacco threw with accuracy and precision, and absolutely picked apart Miami’s defense. After the game, Flacco and some of his offensive teammates pointed to the offensive line as a key reason for the unit’s breakout day. The line didn’t allow a sack all game, and Flacco consistently had time to throw. The image below shows just how much time Flacco had in the pocket – the Ravens kept seven blockers in to protect against four defenders – and he ended up completing this pass to running back Terrance West for a 10-yard gain.

Flacco Also Finds Tight Windows

The offensive line deserves plenty of credit for keeping Flacco clean, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the kind of game Flacco played. The Ravens clearly put the game in his hands with a pass-heavy game plan, and he went to work against Miami’s defense. The play below was a 23-yard pass to Steve Smith Sr. where Flacco zipped the football between three defenders, and the veteran receiver did the rest to pick up a big gain.

Williams Blows Up Tunsil, Perfect Tackle By Orr

Much of the work by defensive tackle Brandon Williams goes unrecognized, and the play below is a perfect example. Coaches routinely talk about how Williams takes on double teams, which creates opportunities for the linebackers to make tackles, and that’s exactly what he did on this first-quarter stuff on running back Jay Ajayi. Williams slipped into the backfield off the snap and then collided with pulling left guard Laremy Tunsil to stop him in his tracks. Taking Tunsil out of the play left linebacker Zachary Orr in a one-on-one situation with Ajayi, and the linebacker had a perfect form tackle to stuff the play at the line of scrimmage.
