Wide Receiver Torrey Smith Signs With Eagles

Posted Mar 9, 2017

The seventh-year receiver opted to sign a reported three-year, $15 million contract with Philadelphia after reports he could return to Baltimore.

Torrey Smith won’t be coming back to Baltimore.

Rumors and speculation of Smith returning to the Ravens started immediately after the San Francisco 49ers released him Monday.

He ultimately ended up coming back to the East Coast, but will be a couple hours up Interstate 95 on a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. The contract is worth $15 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that Smith was “leaning strongly” to the Ravens as of Wednesday, but opted to take the deal with the Eagles.

Smith, 28, was selected by the Ravens out of the University of Maryland in the second round of the 2011 draft. He was highly productive during his four seasons in Baltimore (averaged 53 catches for 898 yards and eight touchdowns per season), won a Super Bowl and become a fan favorite, but he departed for San Francisco on a five-year, $40 million contract two years ago.

Smith’s time with the 49ers didn’t go as planned, and he caught just 53 passes for 930 yards and seven touchdowns over the last couple years. Last season, he posted 20 catches for 267 yards and three scores, and ended the season on injured reserve (concussion) after 12 games.

Having Smith sign with the Eagles could be an indication that the Ravens will exercise Mike Wallace’s contract option to keep him in Baltimore next season. Head Coach John Harbaugh indicated at the combine that Wallace would likely be back in 2017.

Smith is still involved in the Maryland community. His charity basketball game will be held on March 19 at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore.
