5 Things To Watch At Jacksonville Jaguars

Posted Sep 24, 2016

Can Mike Wallace keep up his hot start? Capitalize on turnover opportunities. Keep an eye on the rookies.

Can Mike Wallace Stay Hot?

Wide receiver Mike Wallace has been a bit of a surprise around the NFL as he's tied for a league-high three receiving touchdowns through the first two games. Wallace came to Baltimore intent to prove he could still play at a high level, and that's exactly what he's done to start the season. Quarterback Joe Flacco has quickly developed chemistry with his new target, and Wallace stressed this week that he's not going to get complacent after the hot start. "You don't buy into too much stuff," he said. "This is the league, and things can change every day."

Capitalize On Turnover Opportunities

Forcing turnovers was a focal point throughout the offseason in Baltimore, and interceptions by safety Eric Weddle and linebacker C.J. Mosley were critical in last week's win over Cleveland. The Ravens could have more opportunities to get their hands on the football against Jacksonville, as quarterback Blake Bortles has thrown three interceptions this season. The Ravens have to capitalize on those chances to create turnovers this week, especially on the road.

Can Offense Start Fast?

Getting off to a better start has been a big talking point this week after the Ravens fell behind the Browns 20-0 in the first quarter of last week's game. Flacco and Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman both discussed the importance of putting up points early. The Jaguars are in desperation mode after starting the season 0-2 and losing to the Chargers 38-14 last week, and the Ravens could deliver a blow to their psyche if they jump on them with some early scores. "For the last two weeks, we have done a very good job of finishing," Trestman said. "We want to do a better job of starting. "

Keep An Eye On The Rookies

This year's draft classes for Baltimore and Jacksonville will be always be linked because the Jaguars picked just one spot ahead of the Ravens. There was also the connection to Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Myles Jack. The Ravens tried to trade up in the first round to get Ramsey, and there was plenty of speculation that they would take Jack in the second round. Of course, the Ravens ended up taking left tackle Ronnie Stanley and linebacker Kamalei Correa with their first two picks. The rookies could certainly end up having an important role in the game, as Stanley is Baltimore's starting left tackle and Ramsey is the starting cornerback in Jacksonville.

Get Ground Game Going

Running the ball has been a struggle for the Ravens the first two weeks. Baltimore ranks 23rd in the NFL with 81.5 rushing yards per game, but this week presents an opportunity for a breakthrough. Jacksonville's defense has been susceptible to giving up yards on the ground, ranking 26th in the league (122.5 yards per game). Even though they haven't had much success, the Ravens have stayed committed to the ground game. Establishing the run is still a priority for the offense, and this week's game could be a chance to rip off some long gains.
