Eric Weddle Says Chargers' Move From San Diego Is 'Terrible'

Posted Jan 12, 2017

The Ravens safety played nine years in San Diego and still calls it home. And he’s not happy to see the Chargers uproot their franchise to Los Angeles.

After the Ravens’ season ended, safety Eric Weddle said he would choose to come to Baltimore “100 times over again.”

Following today’s shocking NFL news, he may be even more thankful.

The Chargers are moving to Los Angeles for the 2018 season, the franchise announced, after spending 56 years in San Diego. The Chargers quickly changed their Twitter name and unveiled a new logo.

Weddle, who was drafted by the Chargers in 2007 and played nine years in San Diego, responded on Twitter.

San Diego voted down a ballot measure for a new downtown stadium, which has been an issue for more than a decade. Thus, Chairman Dean Spanos exercised the team’s option to move into the $2.66 billion stadium that Los Angeles Rams Owner Stan Kroenke is building in Inglewood, Calif.

The Ravens will play in the new stadium in 2018. They will play the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

Baltimore holds a 3-4 record in San Diego in franchise history. The most memorable game was a 16-13 overtime win in 2012 when running back Ray Rice moved the chains with “Hey diddle diddle, Ray Rice up the middle” in a fourth-and-29 situation with one minute, 37 seconds left.

Rice avoided Weddle’s tackle thanks to a huge block by wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Weddle was knocked out on the play, and didn’t realize the Ravens had won until he was in the locker room.

The win helped the Ravens take a firmer grip on the AFC North race en route to their Super Bowl XLVII victory.

“The joke is if I make that tackle, the Ravens wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl,” Weddle said in June. “So, I’m still waiting for my ring.”
