John Harbaugh: Ronnie Stanley 'Could Probably Play This Week'

Posted Oct 3, 2016

The Ravens are looking out for the rookie's short- and long-term success, which is why they held him out of Sunday’s game versus Oakland. Rookie left guard Alex Lewis is 'back' after a concussion held him out of the starting lineup.

It appears the Ravens won’t have to be without first-round rookie tackle Ronnie Stanley for long.

Stanley sat out his first game in college or the NFL Sunday against the Raiders due to a lingering foot injury from the week before.

Now it looks like he may return Sunday versus the Washington Redskins.

“I know Ronnie says he could have played, and he probably could have,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday. “He could probably play this week.”

Stanley missed a day of practice leading into the Week 3 tilt in Jacksonville, but was still healthy in time for Sunday. Last week, he didn’t practice at all leading into the game against Oakland, and the Ravens opted to give him more rest.

“You want to do what’s best for the team short-term and long-term, and what’s best for the players short-term and long-term,” Harbaugh said.

“A guy’s health is really important. We’re not throwing guys out there before they’re healthy. It’s not what we do. We want guys to be healthy; it makes them better players for one thing, and it’s just the right thing to do.”

While the Ravens allowed just two sacks and six quarterback hits, quarterback Joe Flacco saw too much pressure from the Raiders, which played a part in throwing off the offense.

Left tackle James Hurst started with Stanley out, and Ryan Jensen started at left guard with rookie fourth-round pick Alex Lewis dealing with the effects of a concussion.

Lewis still suited up for Sunday’s game and was part of the field-goal unit. He was a backup on the offensive line.

Harbaugh said the Ravens gave Jensen the nod as the starter because Lewis had missed so much practice time (he only had one limited practice) as the fourth-round pick went through the concussion protocol. It would have been “a little tough” on a rookie to be a starter given the lack of practice reps throughout the week, Harbaugh said.

That should change this week as Lewis is healthy and ready for a full slate of practice.

“He’s back,” Harbaugh said.
