Ravens Announce Coaching Changes

Posted Jan 12, 2017

The Baltimore Ravens have hired Greg Roman as the team’s senior offensive assistant/tight ends coach, it was announced Thursday by head coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens have also promoted Richard Angulo, who served as tight ends coach for the past two seasons, to assistant offensive line coach.

“Greg had other opportunities over the last few days, and we’re pleased that he has decided to join the Ravens,” Harbaugh stated. “I’ve known Greg for a long time, and he’s a hard worker and very creative. Our football team just got better.”

Roman, 44, enters his 20th NFL coaching season after spending 18 games over the past two years (2015-16) as the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator. Prior to that, he served in the same capacity for four seasons (2011-14) with the San Francisco 49ers. In four of his five full seasons (2011-15) as an offensive coordinator, Roman’s rushing attack ranked in the NFL’s Top 5.

“Getting a veteran coach like Greg Roman to join our staff is a coup for the Ravens,” offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. “He is a very sound coach and a good team player who will help us build our offense.”

Roman returns to the Ravens after serving as the team’s assistant offensive line coach from 2006-07, which included being part of a staff that helped earn the franchise’s best regular season record (13-3 in 2006). Roman also spent significant time with the Houston Texans (2002-05) and Carolina Panthers (1995-2001) in various coaching roles, and he worked a stint in the collegiate ranks at Stanford (2009-10).

“I am very excited to join the Ravens’ staff and help coach Harbaugh and Marty Mornhinweg in any way I can,” Roman said. “The building blocks are there for this team, and we’re all looking forward to being better. I’ve been with the Ravens before and know firsthand what a great organization they have. My family and I are happy to be back.”

Behind Roman, Buffalo produced the NFL’s top-ranked rushing attack (152.0 ypg) in 2015. He also helped direct the 49ers to three-straight NFC Championship games (2011-13), one that yielded an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII against the Ravens in 2012. San Francisco boasted the league’s second-best rushing attack (139.3 ypg) during his time guiding the offense.

Roman also helped 49ers TE Vernon Davis earn Pro Bowl honors in 2013 after recording 52 catches for 850 yards and a career-high-tying 13 touchdowns. Davis compiled 26 receiving touchdowns during Roman’s four seasons.

A three-year letterman and two-year starter on the defensive line at John Carroll (1990-93), Roman earned All-Ohio Conference honorable mention honors after the Blue Streaks captured a share of the OAC Championship his senior season.

A native of Ventnor, N.J., and a graduate of Holy Spirit (Absecon, N.J.) High School, Greg and his wife, Dana, have three children, Connor, Gregory and Emily Grace.
