Ravens In Talks With Running Back Trent Richardson

Posted Feb 25, 2016

Head Coach John Harbaugh said bringing the running back in for a physical is ‘in the works.’

The Ravens are in the process of bringing running back Trent Richardson to Baltimore for a physical with the intention of possibly signing him.

“It’s in the works,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said at the NFL Scouting Combine Thursday. "It's possible. I don't think it's finalized yet, but it's a possibility."

Richardson, a 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist, was out of football last season, just three years after the Cleveland Browns made him the No. 3 overall pick in 2012.

One question surrounding Richardson has been about his explosion, which he hasn’t shown much of in the NFL with a career rushing average of 3.3 yards.

After posting 950 rushing yards (3.6 per carry) and another 367 receiving yards as a rookie, Richardson posted subpar numbers in the following two seasons.

The 5-foot-9, 230-pound bruiser was traded to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick in just his second NFL season. He finished that year averaging 2.9 yards per carry, then upped that number to 3.3 yards per carry as the Colts’ primary starter in 2014.

Richardson signed a two-year deal reportedly worth nearly $4 million with the Oakland Raiders last offseason, but he was released by the team in August after missing a chunk of training camp with pneumonia.

Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome has close ties with his alma mater Alabama. Newsome also gave former Alabama star Rolando McClain a second chance after he was jettisoned from the league. Although McClain never suited up in purple and black, he ultimately caught on in Dallas.

The Ravens already have a full stable of running backs, so Richardson would add to what looks to be a stiff competition.

Baltimore has veteran 2014 Pro Bowler Justin Forsett, who is expected to return from a broken arm, rising sophomore Javorius Allen, third-year player Lorenzo Taliaferro and Terrance West, who impressed last year and is an exclusive rights free agent.
