Ravens Make Scouting Department Hire And Promotions

Posted Jun 9, 2016

The Ravens have promoted Milt Hendrickson and Lonnie Young to national scouts, filling a void after a couple departures. Baltimore has also promoted Andrew Raphael to Southeast area scout and hired Dwaune Jones as Midwest area scout.

The Ravens announced three promotions and one hiring in their personnel department Thursday, filling a void after a pair of departures over the past two years.

Milt Hendrickson and Lonnie Young have been elevated to national scouts, and Andrew Raphael has been named the Southeast area scout.

The Ravens have hired Dwaune Jones, formerly an 11-year scout with the New Orleans Saints, as their Midwest area scout.

The moves were made after National Scout Joe Douglas and East Regional Scout Andy Weidl both left Baltimore over the past two years. Douglas took a promotion in Chicago before the 2015 season, then bounced to Philadelphia about a month ago to be the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel. Douglas then plucked Weidl from the Ravens.

Weidl took on much more than just the east coast last year after the Ravens didn’t appoint a national scout following Douglas’ departure.

Now the Ravens will split the role between Hendrickson and Young, who will both be responsible for evaluating players across the country.

Hendrickson originally joined the Ravens in 2005 as a player personnel assistant before being tabbed the team’s Midwest area scout following the 2008 NFL Draft. He was later promoted to one of the Ravens’ three regional scouts in 2013, when he became responsible for scouting the entire Midwest. Recently, Hendrickson was instrumental in scouting 2013 fifth-round tackle Rick Wagner.

Young, a former NFL defensive back, began his scouting career in 2002 with the New York Jets and first joined the Ravens in 2008 as a West area scout. In 2011, he played a part in Baltimore drafting first-round cornerback Jimmy Smith. Following the 2013 draft, Young was promoted to West regional scout.

Jones was most recently a northern regional scout for the Saints and was previously their Midwest area scout. Prior to Jones’ scouting career, he spent time as an NFL wide receiver with the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans.

Raphael joined the Ravens in 2013 as a player personnel intern before being promoted to player personnel assistant following the 2014 season. He has served in a number of capacities for the Ravens, including helping prepare advance scouting reports for upcoming opponents and assisting in coordinating the post-draft free agent signing process.

In his upcoming role as the Southeast area scout, Raphael will focus on scouting players in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Raphael is the newest member of the Ravens’ “20/20” club, which refers to hiring 20 year olds for $20,000. Those figures aren’t exactly true these days, but indicate an entry level job in the department. Former “20/20” members include Ravens Assistant General Manager Eric DeCosta, Senior Personnel Assistant George Kokinis, Director of College Scouting Joe Hortiz and more.
