Ravens Promote Undrafted Rookie LB Patrick Onwuasor To 53-Man Roster

Posted Oct 15, 2016

To make room, Baltimore released guard/tackle Billy Turner, who was claimed off waivers last Wednesday. The move is an indication that the Ravens could be low on linebackers with C.J. Mosley (thigh) doubtful to play.

The Ravens elevated undrafted rookie linebacker Patrick Onwuasor from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Saturday afternoon. They released guard/tackle Billy Turner to make room.

The move indicates that the Ravens need more depth inside Sunday with C.J. Mosley (thigh) doubtful to play against the New York Giants.

If Mosley does not suit up, the Ravens are expected to slide Albert McClellan inside. Rookie second-round pick Kamalei Correa would be another option, but Head Coach John Harbaugh said his main goal right now is to focus on special teams.

Onwuasor would provide another possibility at inside linebacker, and would also be called on to contribute on special teams.

Onwuasor is a converted 6-foot-0, 217-pound safety from Portland State who made a splash in training camp with some big hits, which led to some not-so-happy veterans at times. But that aggressive, fast, hard-hitting nature could be a boost to Baltimore’s special teams and defense.

Turner was claimed off waivers Wednesday after being released by the Miami Dolphins, but Harbaugh made it clear Friday that he would not be ready in time to play Sunday. With so many injuries, the Ravens needed the roster spot.

They could still retain the 2014 third-round pick on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

“Good guy,” Harbaugh said of Turner. “[Assistant Offensive Line Coach] Todd Washington has had him [studying] pretty much day and night. He looks like he is determined, and he wants to do well. He is happy to be here. We like him. He is a big body with long arms and a tough, hardnosed guy.”
