Ravens Sign Veteran Cornerback Jerraud Powers

Posted May 13, 2016

The Ravens added depth to their secondary by picking up another veteran cornerback. Powers will compete for the outside spot opposite of Jimmy Smith or could play in the slot.

The Ravens said after the draft that they weren’t done building their 2016 season.

They showed that Friday afternoon by signing veteran cornerback Jerraud Powers to a one-year contract.

The 28-year-old defender has started 82 of 87 career games in the NFL throughout his eight-year career, and he will likely end up competing with Shareece Wright and Will Davis for the starting job opposite Jimmy Smith

If Powers doesn’t play on the outside, he also has significant experience in the slot.

Powers, 5-foot-10 and 187 pounds, started 13 games last season for the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the year with 52 tackles, one interception, nine passes defensed and a sack. He also had a fumble recovery that he returned for a touchdown.

The addition of Powers doesn’t count against the compensatory pick formula because it came after May 12. That keeps the Ravens in line to likely get a third-round pick for the departure of Kelechi Osemele in free agency.

He has been a quality defender throughout his career, but finished last season graded as the league’s 86th best cornerback by Pro Football Focus, one spot higher than Jimmy Smith. Powers missed three games last year because of a calf injury, but he returned by the end of the season and started both of Arizona’s playoff games.

He spent the last three years in Arizona after playing for the Colts his first four years in the league. Powers was a third-round pick out of Auburn in 2009, and he has 11 career interceptions.

The Ravens wanted to add some more depth to their secondary after not selecting a cornerback until the third day of the NFL Draft. Baltimore took Temple’s Tavon Young in the fourth round and Virginia’s Maurice Canady in the sixth round, but Powers gives the Ravens a veteran player.
