Steve Smith Sr. Reacts To Offensive Coordinator Change

Posted Oct 10, 2016

While hosting a Facebook Live event, the Ravens wide receiver said you ‘never want to see a man get fired, but things happen.’ He expects changes to be made when it comes to taking shots down the field in the passing attack.

The Ravens players are off Monday, but offensive leader and wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. hosted a Facebook Live event and was asked by fans about the firing of Marc Trestman.

“Trestman’s firing is the same way you’ve got to look at a player. Things move on,” Smith said. “Next man up. That’s the unfortunate thing about it.”

Smith said Head Coach John Harbaugh talked to him about the change. Harbaugh spoke to offensive leaders after making the decision himself.

A fan asked Smith if he was happy to see Trestman go.

“No,” Smith said. “Never want to see a man get fired, but things happen.”

It remains to be seen what changes will be made, but the Ravens have not frequently attacked downfield with their passing game, and did not stay committed to the run game Sunday against the Redskins.

The Ravens are currently the NFL’s No. 23-ranked offense, averaging 338.2 yards per game and 18.8 points per game.

Quarterback Joe Flacco said Sunday that he was having a tough time staying patient in the passing game.

Smith was asked if there will be more deep pass attempts under new Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

“We just got the new offensive coordinator today, so I’m not sure,” Smith said. “Obviously, when you change, you want changes.”

Smith left Sunday’s game in the first half with an ankle injury. He rolled it and came back for one more play and catch before exiting the game for good.

Smith said he was icing up Monday morning.

“It’s fine,” he said. “It’s good enough to walk.”
