Terrell Suggs Still Edges Out Joey Bosa in Sacks Milestone

Posted Nov 13, 2017

Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa registered his 20th career sack Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, making him the second-youngest to that mark behind Terrell Suggs.

Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa registered his 20th career sack Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He’s just 22 years, four months and two days old. He’s really, really good.

But as incredible as that hot start is, it’s a reminder of how young and dominant Ravens veteran outside linebacker Terrell Suggs was at the beginning of his career.

Bosa is the second-youngest player to reach 20 sacks in NFL history, trailing only Suggs.

Suggs accomplished the feat on Nov. 21, 2004 in a 30-10 Ravens win over the Dallas Cowboys. At that point, Suggs was 22 years, one month and 10 days old.

A 10th-overall pick in 2003, Suggs had 12 sacks as a rookie and 10.5 in his sophomore season.

Since reaching those 20 quarterback takedowns, Suggs has gone on to register 100 more sacks during his now 15-year career. His 120 sacks place him 21st overall in NFL history and he can crack the top 20 with two more.

Suggs has the third-most career sacks among active players, trailing the Carolina Panthers’ Julius Peppers (151) and Seattle Seahawks’ Dwight Freeney (125.5).

Suggs has 5.5 sacks through nine games this season, putting him on pace to reach double digits for the seventh time in his career – at age 35.

It’s for reasons such as this that Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Mularkey brought up Suggs two weeks ago before the teams’ Week 9 tilt. Mularkey was asked about what he’s seen from cornerback Jimmy Smith and linebacker C.J. Mosley this year.

“They are good players, very good players,” Mularkey said. “I don’t know why you are not mentioning Suggs. He looks like he is playing about as well as he has played.”

Suggs ranks as the fifth-best outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense in the league, per Pro Football Focus. He only trails the Denver Broncos’ Von Miller, Oakland Raiders’ Khalil Mack, Indianapolis Colts’ Jabaal Sheard and Kansas City Chiefs’ Justin Houston.
