"The Competition" is a series that breaks down every position battle leading up to training camp.

Returning Players

Lardarius Webb (5-foot-10, 182 pounds, eighth season)

Kendrick Lewis (6-0, 205, seventh season)

Matt Elam (5-10, 200, fourth season)

Terrence Brooks (5-11, 200, third season)

Anthony Levine Sr. (5-11, 200, fifth season)

Free-Agent Signing

Eric Weddle (5-11, 200, 10th season)

Projected Starters

Weddle and Webb are slated to be the starters. Weddle is the new leader in the group and will be in charge of lining up the secondary. The Pro Bowler has been impressive thus far, showing high enthusiasm, good range and a lot of communication. Webb is making the transition from cornerback and still could be called on in a pinch to move back outside. He loves playing safety, however, and it's a full-time switch that suits him well considering his experience and playmaking ability.

Key Role Players

If Webb is needed at cornerback, or if the Ravens want to roll in different players in specific packages, Defensive Coordinator Dean Pees could call on Lewis. Lewis started 15 games last year and is a reliable contributor who understands the scheme and playbook very well. However, he didn't notch an interception last year.

Most Anticipated Battle

Elam, Brooks and Levine will compete for one or two spots. Elam is a former first-round pick who knows this may be his last chance at proving himself after missing all of last year with a torn biceps. Entering his third season, Brooks also needs to prove that he's worthy of defensive snaps. He has the talent. Levine is an anchor on special teams and versatile as a safety or cornerback.
