WR Steve Smith Out For Game With Ankle Injury

Posted Oct 9, 2016

The veteran receiver suffered an ankle injury in the first half of Sunday's game against the Redskins. Right tackle Rick Wagner was also ruled out with a thigh issue.

Steve Smith Sr. is left Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins in the first half and never returned.

The veteran receiver suffered an ankle injury and tried to play through it, but the Ravens ultimately determined he was unable to return.

The injury appeared to first occur when Smith got tackled after a first-quarter reception. He limped over to the sidelines and quickly got checked out by the medical staff. Smith then returned to the game and made a tough catch on third down – he also drew a pass interference call on the play – but he again limped over to the bench.

After getting examined in the locker room, Smith tried jogging along the sidelines under the supervision of the training staff, but they determined he could not return. He finished the game with three catches for 29 yards.

Head Coach John Harbaugh did not have an update on Smith’s status after the game, and the veteran did not talk with the media.

A report from Pro Football Talk said that Smith is expected to return next week against the Giants.

In addition to Smith’s injury, the Ravens also lost starting right tackle Rick Wagner to a thigh injury. Wagner appeared to sustain the injury on the final play of the second half when the Ravens attempted one last play from the Baltimore 40 with one second left on the clock.

With Wagner out, the Ravens moved Marshal Yanda to right tackle and inserted Ryan Jensen at left guard. Baltimore was without both starting tackles, as rookie left tackle Ronnie Stanley was inactive for the second straight week with a foot injury. Center Jeremy Zuttah was the only offensive lineman playing in his same position from Week 1.

The Ravens did not provide an update on Wagner’s status after the game.
