What You Missed vs. New York Giants

Posted Oct 18, 2016

Example of what Ravens will lose without Terrell Suggs. Ryan Jensen opens holes in the running game and plays to the very end of the whistle.

The Ravens dropped a disappointing game on the road Sunday to the New York Giants.

Baltimore’s third-straight loss moved them to 3-3 on the season, and here's a look at the game film to get a deeper look at what happened and points you may have missed. (All of these plays were viewed using NFL Game Pass, which is available for fans to purchase.)

Example Of What Ravens Lose Without Terrell Suggs

Outside linebacker Terrell Suggs suffered a biceps injury Sunday that he plans to play through this season, but Head Coach John Harbaugh said it would be “tough for him to play” this week against the Jets. However long Suggs is out, the Ravens will miss him in a number of areas across the defense. He leads the team with five sacks and he’s also the emotional leader of the defense. A lesser-appreciated aspect of Suggs’ game what he does to stop the run. Suggs demonstrates that by blowing up this run in the backfield. He shoved the tight end off the line of scrimmage to set the edge and force the running back upfield where safety Eric Weddle and defensive tackles Timmy Jernigan and Brandon Williams cleaned up the play for a stop.

Ryan Jensen Plays To The Whistle

Anybody who’s watched a Ravens training camp practice knows that offensive lineman Ryan Jensen has a reputation for getting under defenders’ skin. He’s an aggressive player who doesn’t mind mixing it up between downs, and he plays to the whistle on every snap. Jensen showed that in the first quarter against the Giants. He helped out right tackle James Hurst in blocking defensive end Olivier Vernon, and Jensen didn’t let up on his block until the play was clearly over. Jensen pushed Vernon back several yards behind the line of scrimmage and ultimately pancaked him after quarterback Joe Flacco released the football. Jensen and Vernon got into a little shoving match after the play, but the hit was clean because Jensen really had no way of knowing Flacco had released the football.

Ryan Jensen Opens Holes For Run Game

Jensen had a solid overall day filling in for All-Pro right guard Marshal Yanda. He cleared a path for running back Terrance West to get into the backfield on this 33-yard gain in the second quarter. Jensen cut down defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, which created a log jam in the middle of the defense. Hurst also helped seal off the block. West then saw the hole and cut upfield where he had open field. West also deserves credit for making safety Landon Collins miss on the first tackle, which gave him a chance to pick up the long gain.
