Will Alex Lewis Or John Urschel Start At Left Guard?

Posted Sep 9, 2016

The rookie fourth-round pick started the final three preseason games, but Urschel has returned from a shoulder injury.

Left guard is the only starting job with some uncertainty around it going into Sunday’s opener against Buffalo.

The Ravens have yet to announce whether rookie Alex Lewis or third-year lineman John Urschel will get the start, as both of them took their reps with the starters in training camp.

Lewis, a fourth-round pick out of Nebraska, started the final three games of the preseason after Urschel went down with a shoulder injury. But Urschel was the leader in the competition before getting hurt, and he is still listed atop the depth chart after returning to practice as a full participant this week.

“We just have to play all of that out,” Harbaugh said as the Ravens started their preparation for the Bills.

If Urschel is healthy enough to play, the Ravens will have to weigh the potential that Lewis showed in his three preseason starts against the experience Urschel has over the last three years. Urschel has 10 starts under his belt, and he has played well in each of those outings.

But the Ravens also like the ability of the 6-foot-6, 315-pound rookie.

“[Lewis] has certainly done a very good job when he has been in there,” Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman said.

Another possibility is that Trestman hinted at using a combination of the two based on the situation.

“I’ll let [Harbaugh] determine how that is going to play itself out, but I would expect depending on how much time of possession, depending on how many plays, the guys that are [active] are going to see some kind of playing time,” he said.

First-round pick Ronnie Stanley is already entrenched at left tackle, so if Lewis gets the nod, it would be the first time in franchise history the Ravens start two rookies on the left side of their line.

“Having Ronnie and myself over there, yeah we’re young. Yeah, there are going to be some growing pains along with it,” Lewis said. “We’re both quick learners. We both love the game. We both study really well. All those little aspects are going to come to show in the games hopefully on Sunday. And hopefully we can perform well.”
