Round 4: Ravens Draft DT Willie Henry At No. 132

Posted Apr 30, 2016

The 6-foot-3, 303-pound Michigan product had 6.5 sacks last season and likely slid due to the abundance of defensive tackles in this year's draft class.

Head Coach John Harbaugh probably got some good information on this pick.

Baltimore selected Michigan defensive tackle Willie Henry with one of its five fourth-round picks (No. 132) Saturday afternoon.

Henry was coached by Harbaugh's brother, Jim, as well as former Ravens Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison, who is now the Wolverines' defensive coordinator.

"Coach [Jim] Harbaugh put in a great word with his brother and the Ravens organization," Henry said. "They took a chance on me and I'm not going to prove them wrong."

Henry is a 6-foot-3, 303-pound prospect hailing from Cleveland. He had a big junior season with 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He started nine games and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

Jim reportedly wanted Henry to return for his senior season, but Henry followed the advice of former teammate Frank Clark, who left early and was selected in last year's second round by the Seahawks. Now Henry can continue being mentored by a Harbaugh.

"I know God had a plan and the plan was for me to be in Baltimore," Henry said. "I can't wait to go play for another Coach Harbaugh. So right now, I'm just ecstatic."

Harbaugh took serious interest in Henry when he went to the Michigan coaching clinic in March. While he was there, he worked out some Wolverines entering the draft.

“He opened my eyes," Harbaugh said. "I was like, ‘This guy is a talented, explosive player.’”

In a draft with a ton of depth at defensive tackle, Henry slid further down the board than pundits expected. The Ravens got him at the end of the fourth round but he was given a third-round grade by NFL Media.

Henry uses leverage and his power to get underneath offensive linemen. He's heavy handed and powerful enough to stack defenders and make tackles in the run game. His 6.5 sacks are particularly noteworthy for an interior defensive lineman.

Henry said he feels he can play all of the defensive line positions. He'll provide depth with Brandon Williams, Timmy Jernigan and others.

"They play aggressive and I'm an aggressive player," Henry said. "I feel I'll fit in perfectly."
