The Ravens added depth to their secondary, but it won't come in handy until the middle of the season.
On Friday, the team signed free safety Will Hill, who was a free agent after being waived by the New York Giants in June. The Giants parted ways with Hill after his third drug suspension in three years.
"If we need it, Will will provide depth in the middle of the season," General Manager Ozzie Newsome said.
"[He's] a good football player," Head Coach John Harbaugh added. "I had a chance to get to know him; I like where his head is at this time right now, and we'll see how he does."
The NFL suspended Hill for the first six games of the 2014 season because of his latest violation of the league's substance abuse policy. Hill also missed the first four games of the 2013 season, and four games during the 2012 season.
"It was being irresponsible," Hill said after his first practice Friday. "I feel like I've learned. I'm just ready to play football."
Hill said the Ravens called the Giants and heard "nothing but good words." Hill also spoke with Newsome himself.
"It was getting comfortable with each other and letting him know that the things that happened in New York won't be a problem down here," Hill said.
Hill emerged as a strong starter for the Giants last year, and was in line to start again this season prior to his suspension. He played in 12 games in 2013, notching 77 tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown.
The third-year NFL safety was a standout player at the University of Florida and was a member of the 2009 BCS National Championship team. He went undrafted in 2011, playing in the Arena Football League before the Giants picked him up in 2012.
"[I bring] aggressive play and a lot of ability," Hill said.
When Hill is eligible, he will provide depth behind veteran free safety Darian Stewart, Jeromy Iles and third-round rookie Terrence Brooks. The three are battling to play across from Matt Elam, with Stewart as the favorite for the starting role.
Cornerback Aaron Ross tore his Achilles tendon on Thursday, putting him out for the season. It's unknown whether Hill's signing is to help offset the loss of Ross.
