7/31 Training Camp Practice Highlights

After getting bested by the defense for the last couple days, the offense turned it around during Wednesday's practice.

The offense had a good day, and finished practice with the winning score of 61 to 29.

"Where's those ice cream trucks at today?" running back Ray Rice said as he walked off the practice field.

In addition to the offense making plenty of plays, here were some of the other notable highlights from the day:

  • Kicker Justin Tucker took center stage near the end of practice. Head Coach John Harbaugh had him attempt a 71-yard field goal, and the kick came up just about five yards short. "I was really disappointed with that 71-yard miss," Harbaugh joked after practice. Before the crazy-long attempt, Tucker drilled a series of 50-plus yard kicks with relative ease. He also booted a 61-yard field goal. Before he made the 61 yarder, Harbaugh called him onto the field and said, "I want to see Tuck make it from here." Tucker then booted it through the uprights with room to spare.
  •  Tight end Ed Dickson had a good day of practice. He made a handful of catches, including an impressive one with safety James Ihedigbo on his back. Dickson flashed strong hands on the play and ripped the ball away from Ihedigbo over the middle of the field. The Ravens are counting on Dickson with Pitta down, and Harbaugh said after practice that he practiced "extremely well."

  • Right guard Marshal Yanda has yet to practice during training camp as he recovers from a shoulder injury, but Harbaugh said that the Pro Bowler is "on schedule" and that he's doing "very well." Harbaugh did not give an exact timetable for Yanda's return, but said that it would likely be late in training camp.
  • Offensive lineman Ramon Harewood missed practice again and Harbaugh said that he's undergone tests on his knee. Harewood received an injection in his knee and is expected to return soon.
  •  Wide receivers LaQuan Williams (shoulder), Marlon Brown (knee) and Tommy Streeter (heat exhaustion) all returned to the practice field today.
  •  Williams made an impressive return to the field. He made a number of nice catches in his first practice since last week, and made sure that he's not getting forgotten in the wide receiver competition.
  • Wide receiver Torrey Smith had another good day of practice, and he also showed a little bit of fire. Smith is not one to usually trash talk, but he got into a shoving match with cornerback Chykie Brown after a play during seven-on-seven drills. Joe Flacco liked the fire, and shouted, "Get him Torrey!"
  • Who says Bernard Pierce doesn't have good hands? The second-year running back made a nice catch over the middle and then held on after a hit from Ihedigbo. Pierce shook off the hit and then ran into the end zone. He even did a little touchdown dance to celebrate.
  • Speaking of dancing … Wide receiver Jacoby Jones had one of the best plays of the day when he caught a deep bomb from Flacco that would have gone for a 70-yard touchdown. It was reminiscent of Denver in the AFC divisional round. Jones beat cornerback Corey Graham on the play and Flacco lofted the ball to him perfectly in stride.
  • Rookie tight end Matt Furstenburg had a big play of his own, catching a touchdown pass from quarterback Tyrod Taylor that went for a 70-yard touchdown. The defense had blown coverage on the play, as Furstenburg caught about a 20-yard pass wide open over the middle and then ran the rest of the way for a touchdown. He's looking to make the most of his opportunities now that there's an open spot at tight end. "He's playing himself into a possible opportunity to make the team," Harbaugh said.
  • Recently-signed tight end veteran Visanthe Shiancoe got more involved in the offense during practice. After mostly just doing seven-on-seven drills the last few days, he participated in full-team drills and is starting to get a better grasp on the offense.
