How the Head Coach Interview Process Works

For the first time in nearly two decades, the Ravens are looking for a new head coach.

Baltimore parted ways with John Harbaugh Tuesday after an 18-year tenure that included 12 playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Ravens were one of seven teams that are filling a head coaching vacancy.

Starting Wednesday, the Ravens are permitted to request interviews with candidates whose teams didn't make the playoffs or have first-round byes, as well as any candidate who is not currently employed by a team. Interviews with candidates who are on teams with a first-round bye (Seahawks and Broncos) must be completed before the conclusion of Wild Card Weekend.

All interviews must be conducted virtually until the divisional round of the playoffs is finished, excluding candidates who aren't currently with a team. Once the divisional round is over, Baltimore can hold in-person interviews with any candidate whose season has concluded.

If the Ravens want to interview any candidates coaching in the conference championship games, there is a one-week window between when those games end and the week leading up to the Super Bowl. To resume contact with candidates competing in the Super Bowl, the Ravens must wait until the day after the Super Bowl.

No coach currently with a team can sign or agree to sign a contract until their season is over.

The Ravens must also follow the Rooney Rule, which stipulates that any team hiring a new head coach must hold an in-person interview with at least two external candidates who are minorities and/or women.
