Torrey Smith, Bernard Pierce Suffer Concussions

The injuries continue to mount for the Ravens.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith and running back Bernard Pierce both suffered concussions and did not return in Sunday's loss to the Broncos. Their status for next week's game against the Giants is up in the air.

"We'll have to check those out later this week," Head Coach John Harbaugh said.

Smith suffered the concussion on a pass play down the sidelines in the second half, where he made a leaping catch out of bounds. Smith's head hit the ground as he fell to the turf, and he stumbled while trying to get back to his feet.

Smith gingerly made his way to the bench after the play and was looked at by the team's training staff, who then took him into the locker room for further evaluation.

After coming back from the locker room, Smith was ruled out of the game, but he appeared to be pleading his case with the training staff on the sidelines to let him back in the game. Smith finished the day with one catch for 14 yards.

Pierce suffered his injury in the first half, but it's unclear exactly when he suffered the concussion. Pierce had five carries for 20 yards and was replaced as the No. 2 back by Anthony Allen in the second half.

The other offensive player to suffer an injury was wide receiver Tandon Doss, who twisted his ankle in the second half on a punt return.

"We'll see how that is tomorrow," Harbaugh said.

Linebacker Albert McClellan also suffered a hamstring injury, but he was able to play through the pain to help an injury-riddled linebacking corps.

In addition to those that occurred Sunday, the Ravens are also dealing with injuries to linebackers Dannell Ellerbe (ankle), Jameel McClain (neck/back) and Ray Lewis (triceps), who all missed the game.

Ellerbe warmed up on the field before the game, but had a noticeable limp and was made inactive. McClain was ruled out earlier in the week and he is going to see a specialist about his injury. Lewis remains on the injured reserve-designated to return list after tearing his triceps muscle in Week 6.

The Ravens turned to Brendon Ayanbadejo and Josh Bynes to take the reps at inside linebacker.

The other key absences for the Ravens was that of leading tackler Bernard Pollard, who missed his first game of the season with a chest injury, and starting right guard Marshal Yanda. James Ihedigbo took Pollard's spot in the lineup and Bobbie Williams started in place of Yanda.

Starting tight end Ed Dickson also missed his third straight game with a knee injury. Veteran Billy Bajema played in his place.

"We understand [injuries] is part of it," Harbaugh said. "You have to do whatever you can to overcome it and that's what we've been doing."

The good news for the Ravens on the injury front was that outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (biceps) and cornerback Jimmy Smith (sports hernia) were both able to suit up on Sunday.

Suggs started and played through noticeable pain, as he came over to the sidelines shaking his arm on a couple of occasions.

Smith was used in limited action and worked as the No. 3 cornerback at times behind Cary Williams and Corey Graham. The Ravens also used Chris Johnson and Chykie Brown as the No. 3 cornerback at times, rather than giving Smith a full workload.

With two games left on the schedule, the Ravens hope they can get some of their key pieces back for next week's regular-season home finale at M&T Bank Stadium.

"Getting healthy is going to be important for us," Harbaugh said. "That's something I think we are getting closer to doing. If we can get healthy and get strong down the stretch, I think that will help us."
