Justin Forsett Preparing To Seize The Moment

There was a 5-foot-8 running back taking the first snaps during 11-on-11 drills.

He showed a great combination of burst and speed, caught a pass out of the backfield with one hand and was a popular target of quarterback Joe Flacco.

No, it wasn't Ray Rice. It was Justin Forsett.

The Ravens signed Forsett as a free agent this offseason after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. That signing has flown under the radar, but Forsett may have a bigger role than some realize.

He was ahead of Rice in running with the first-team offense during the first week of organized team activities (OTAs), and could be relied on in the Ravens offense, particularly at the start of the year.

"My mentality is to just seize the moment when it comes," Forsett said. "I have to be ready when my number is called. I'm preparing for that opportunity."

There's still four months before the Ravens play a regular-season game, but Baltimore has some uncertainty at running back at this time of the year.

Rice has the possibility of an early-season suspension hanging over his head. Backup Bernard Pierce is coming off a shoulder injury and hasn't been fully cleared. Rookie fourth-round pick Lorenzo Taliaferro was recently arrested in Virginia.

Forsett is the only one with a clean bill of health and no off-the-field issues.

He also has a leg up on the other running backs because he knows new Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak's system. He ran it (and ran it well) in 2012 in Houston, averaging 5.9 yards per carry on 63 rushes for 374 yards.

Forsett said he "pretty much" remembers everything from his days in Houston.

"I know the offense, so I feel comfortable going in wherever they want me," he said. "It helps a lot because I'm not learning something new. I can work on some other little things instead of learning the concepts and terms."

Forsett was released by the Jaguars on March 11 after a disappointing 2013 season. Playing through injuries, he suited up for just nine games and had a career-low six carries for 31 yards. He was placed on injured reserve in December with a broken foot.

Forsett said the foot was healed in early-February, and he showed no ill effects on the field during the first week of OTAs.

"I've just got to continue to prove myself," he said. "I've done it all before. I've been a No. 1 back, a No. 2 back, a third-down back. Any type of back, I've been it. I'm ready for anything."
