"The Competition" is a series that breaks down every Ravens' position battle leading up to training camp.
Returning Players
Chris Canty (6-foot-7, 317 pounds, 10th season)
Canty was solid in his first season with the Ravens, starting 13 games and making 30 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. The numbers paced other seasons, but Canty said he was personally disappointed. Canty made more of a commitment this offseason to come into camp in better shape than he did last year.
DeAngelo Tyson (6-2, 315, third season)
Tyson began to emerge last year. In a span of four games near the end of the season, the former seventh-round pick notched two sacks and an interception. Now Tyson knows that he has to step up this season in the wake of Arthur Jones' departure via free agency to Indianapolis. Tyson has a good combination of strength and athletic ability to play the run and pass.
Kapron Lewis-Moore (6-4, 310, second season)
Lewis-Moore spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL in the NCAA national championship game as a senior. He was able to practice for part of the year, but the Ravens opted to keep him sidelined. Now Lewis-Moore is totally healthy and was impressive during rookie camp, which included returning injured vets, and parts of Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
Rookie
Brent Urban (6-7, 295)
The Ravens fourth-round pick is in a similar mold to Canty. He's huge. Urban is a physical, relentless player out of Virginia who hasn't yet honed his pass-rush skills, but the Ravens are hopeful those will develop. A former hockey player from Canada, Urban has the length to be a menace swatting passes and the athleticism to develop into an impact player.
Frontrunners
The Ravens seemed poised to handle the loss of Jones well. They'll use a rotation in his spot with Canty the likely leader for most of the starts.
However, Canty will be seriously pushed for snaps by some of his younger counterparts. Tyson has the early edge on Lewis-Moore because of the two years under his belt while Lewis-Moore is essentially entering his first year. Considering Canty and Tyson have the flexibility to move inside, all four players are strong bets to make the roster.
