Dog With Purple Heart Meets Ravens

Ravens fans may say they bleed purple, but not many have a Purple Heart.

Lucca, a 10-year-old German Shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix with just three legs, came to Ravens training camp Saturday to meet the players and coaches.

Head Coach John Harbaugh shared Lucca's story with the team the night before practice. And with Harbaugh's military connections, he made an in-person meeting possible.

Lucca lost a leg in an explosion from a roadside bomb while saving a platoon of U.S. Marines in Afghanistan in 2012. She was a specialized search dog trained to find explosives.

Lucca went on three combat deployments and never had an injury when she was on patrol. For her efforts, Lucca was awarded a prestigious Purple Heart.

She retired after eight years in the military and now lives in Finland with Gunnery Sgt. Chris Willingham, who also came to the Ravens' facility.
