Edmondson-Westside's Corey Johnson Named Ravens High School Coach of the Week

Corey Johnson, varsity head football coach of the Edmondson-Westside (Baltimore, Md.) Red Storm, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Johnson is the ninth recipient of the award in 2013.

Last Friday (11/1), Edmondson (6-3) earned a 14-0 shutout victory over the defending Maryland Class 1A state champion Dunbar (Baltimore, Md.) Poets. Behind a stout defensive effort, the Red Storm posted both scores off of takeaways returned for touchdowns. Junior safety Jaequan Hill opened the first half scoring after forcing a fumble and returning it 73 yards for a touchdown. In the third quarter, Hill returned an interception 55 yards for the game's deciding score.

Prior to the contest, Dunbar had not been held scoreless in seven years, and suffered its first loss to a public school in over two seasons. The win also marked the first for the Red Storm over the Poets since 2006.

In his first year as head coach at Edmondson, Johnson's team has clinched a playoff berth in the Class 1A South Region. Earning shutout victories in five of their last six games, the Red Storm have been fueled by stellar defensive efforts. "We pride ourselves on defense," stated Johnson. "We bring a lot of pressure and try to force turnovers. We fly around the ball, come off the edges and make plays happen. We play sound, fundamental defense, and we really want to create turnovers."

The Red Storm host Mervo (Baltimore, Md.) this Friday (11/8) in both schools' regular season finales.

Each week during the season, the Ravens will honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance at the Ravens-Vikings home game on Dec. 8 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

Each weekly recipient receives:
