Glenelg's Butch Schaffer Named Ravens High School Coach of the Week

Butch Schaffer, varsity head football coach of the Glenelg (Glenelg, Md.) Gladiators, has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Schaffer is the fifth recipient of the award in 2013.

Last Friday (10/4), the Gladiators defeated Howard, 35-20, handing the visiting Lions their first loss of the season. Glenelg (4-1) received key contributions on both sides of the ball from senior DB/WR David Brookhart, who opened the scoring with a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown. Brookhart then added a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter before catching a 41-yard fourth quarter score to seal the game for the Gladiators. The Glenelg victory was the second in consecutive weeks over previously unbeaten teams as it defeated Hammond (Columbia, Md.), 35-3, on Sept. 27.

After a season-opening loss against the defending Class 3A state champions from River Hill (Clarksville, Md.), Glenelg has now won four consecutive games. "Our team continues to improve every week," stated Schaffer. "I'm really proud of the kids' effort on the practice field and during games. They give everything they have on every play, and that's what we need to compete in the Howard County league."

The Gladiators travel to Oakland Mills (Columbia, Md.) this Friday (10/11) to take on the Scorpions, who are 2-3 this season.

Each week during the season, the Ravens will honor a high school coach who has made a significant impact on his student-athletes. Each winner will be in attendance at the Ravens-Vikings home game on Dec. 8 for an opportunity to be named the Ravens High School Coach of the Year.

Each weekly recipient receives:

  • A $2,000 donation to the school's football program
  • An award certificate signed by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh
  • A specially-designed Coach of the Week hat
